Far too many American do not have a good handle on what is really happening. Is it because they are addicted, as to dope, on the oil-soaked, spy-riddled monopoly press?
A hopeful sign, however, lately is that a growing number of ordinary Americans are seeking additional data from certain internet websites they have come to more and more respect.
Still in all, far too many click on nytimes.com, washingtonpost.com, and chicagotribune.com, for supposed "news". That is, what we prefer to call "The Liars and Whores of the Press" (both men and women press prostitutes). Left out by what we call the "n ews fakers" are historical as well as other related items to help explain current events.
BACKGROUND.
[1] In the 16th Century, Jordan was ruled by the Ottoman Turkish empire. The British grabbed land and power following World War One with the crumbling of the Ottoman Empire, a loser in that War. Formerly known as Trans-Jordan, the territory was separate d from the Palestine mandate in 1920 and in 1921, placed under the rule of Abdullah ibn Hussein. Britain carved out the territory, ignoring natural boundaries, as if it were a regular checkerboard design.
In World War Two, Trans-Jordan was loyal to Great Britain. So, in 1946, Britain recognized Trans-Jordan as a separate state. And in 1946, Amir Abdullah assumed the title of King. In 1951, King Abdullah was assassinated. His son Talal, heir to the throne , was removed, called deposed, because he was mentally ill. Talal's son, Hussein, born in 1935, became the new King.The territory in 1946 was renamed The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
King Hussein had to walk a tightrope between Israel on the West and surrounding Arab dictators pushing nationalism.
Starting with King Abdullah and continuing for the 46 years of the reign of King Hussein, the American CIA heavily subsidized the monarchy. In effect, the various Directors of Central Intelligence were in charge of Jordan and King Hussein was an obedien t puppet. On February 7, 1999, after 46 years on the throne, King Hussein died of cancer. Weeks prior, he unexpectedly removed his brother Prince Hassan, who had been heir apparent to the throne for some 34 years. King Hussein named his eldest son, Abdu llah, age 37, as the new crown prince. Without any political experience to speak of, but a military leader, King Abdullah II, was crowned on February 7, 1999.
[2] Two important events, related to this commentary, occurred in the summer of 1992. Fiirst, delivered to our public access Cable TV Show was a file cabinet. It contained the travel documents, secret terrorist meeting codes, secret names and addresses, and methods of contacts between smugglers of weapons as provided to known worldwide terrorist groups such as the deadly Abu Nidal Terrorist Gang. Included in the treasure trove of records were hand-written notations of some of the weapons providers, re lated notations, secret notebooks, copies of related telexes, and other communications.
These were the records of four Lesbian women partners that included Hillary Rodham Clinton, whose husband Bill was then running for president; and her business partner, Diane Lewis, who ran in Chicago, a supposed firm refurbishing and selling to wealthy sheiks and such, large airplanes for their use. The Lesbian link was important to the overall events.
Prior to taping our one hour program, we became privy to the direct eyewitness testimony and interviews, further corroborating the self-explanatory secret documents. Our long reliable sources within and outside the government confirmed that the American CIA, and the FBI, that is, America's secret political police, permitted and condoned this situation.

In the end, I think we are just tired of being lied to. Tired of being talked down to, of being bombarded with Second World War jingoism and scare stories and false information and student essays dressed up as "intelligence". We are sick of being insulted by little men, by Tony Blair and Jack Straw and the likes of George Bush and his cabal of neo-conservative henchmen who have plotted for years to change the map of the Middle East to their advantage.
No wonder, then, that Hans Blix's blunt refutation of America's "intelligence" at the UN yesterday warmed so many hearts. Suddenly, the Hans Blixes of this world could show up the Americans for the untrustworthy "allies" they have become.
The British don't like Hussein any more than they liked Nasser. But millions of Britons remember, as Blair does not, the Second World War; they are not conned by childish parables of Hitler, Churchill, Chamberlain and appeasement. They do not like being lectured and whined at by men whose experience of war is Hollywood and television.
Still less do they wish to embark on endless wars with a Texas governor-executioner who dodged the Vietnam draft and who, with his oil buddies, is now sending America's poor to destroy a Muslim nation that has nothing at all to do with the crimes against humanity of 11 September. Jack Straw, the public school Trot-turned-warrior, ignores all this, with Blair. He brays at us about the dangers of nuclear weapons that Iraq does not have, of the torture and aggression of a dictatorship that America and Britain sustained when Saddam was "one of ours". But he and Blair cannot discuss the dark political agenda behind George Bush's government, nor the "sinister men" (the words of a very senior UN official) around the President.
Those who oppose war are not cowards. Brits rather like fighting; they've biffed Arabs, Afghans, Muslims, Nazis, Italian Fascists and Japanese imperialists for generations, Iraqis included – though we play down the RAF's use of gas on Kurdish rebels in the 1930s. But when the British are asked to go to war, patriotism is not enough. Faced with the horror stories, Britons – and many Americans – are a lot braver than Blair and Bush. They do not like, as Thomas More told Cromwell in A Man for All Seasons, tales to frighten children.

The Men Who Run the World

Remember those heady six years when Mikhail Gorbachev dominated world events so completely that Ted Turner said he was the greatest world leader in the last 2,000 years? The Velvet Revolution, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Cold War, the birth of the New World Order, a Nobel Peace Prize and the dissolution of the Soviet Union all occurred in such rapid succession that it almost took our breath away. Then suddenly he was gone. Did he just burn himself out? Does such a dynamic leader become content to just fade into the pages of history? Or has he perhaps found other ways to pursue the lofty goals of his much-vaunted New World Order?
Gorbachev left the Soviet Union in 1991. He immediately, as though it had already been planned, launched the Gorbachev Fund. He described the Fund as a think-tank whose purpose was to explore the path that global governance should take as mankind progressed into the interdependent global society. Working with Maurice Strong, General-Secretary of the highly publicized Earth Summit of 1992, Gorbachev founded an international environmental organization called Green Cross International. He also managed to be named president of this new organization. Since that time, environmental issues have asserted their dominance over every business, building project, military activity and individual life. Green Cross International is no fly-by-night organization. Gorbachev was immediately able to enlist Yoko Ono (widow of John Lennon), Olivia Newton John, John Denver, Carl Sagan and Javier Peres de Cuellar (ex-Secretary-General of the UN) to serve on the board of directors. His two presidential advisors for Green Cross International are Robert Redford and CNN's Ted Turner.
Maurice Strong
Who is this Maurice Strong with whom Gorbachev seems to have so much in common? Strong is a Canadian multi-billionaire, an avid believer in global government and a convinced socialist. Interestingly, he owns a 10,000-acre ranch in Colorado that serves as a new-age spiritual retreat for believers in universal spirituality. A Zen Buddhist temple has been built there, Zoroastrians have a worship center there, as well as many other like-minded New Age cults.
Kofi Annan
The deeper we investigate, the stranger this story becomes. In the early 90’s, President Clinton became unhappy with the operation of the United Nations. He claimed the organization was in desperate need of reform. Using the U.S. veto, he blocked the appointment of Boutros Boutros-Ghali for a second term as UN Secretary-General. He then handpicked his successor--the present Secretary-general, Kofi Annan. Annan proceeded to create a new position at the UN--Under Secretary-General for UN Reform. He then announced the person chosen to reform the United Nations, preparing it for world governance in the emerging 21st Century. Why were we not surprised when he chose New Age, globalist, socialist Maurice Strong?
Ted Turner
In the meantime, Gorbachev admirer Ted Turner believes so strongly in the destiny of the UN that he decided to give the largest single gift ever granted to an organization. He announced that he would bestow $1 billion dollars to advance the UN's mission. This is the same Ted Turner that has controlling interest in Time Warner, which has now entered into partnership with America Online (AOL).
Al Gore
Once Strong joined Annan at the UN, it was decided that a visit to the White House would be in order. The U.S. Congress was refusing to pay close attention to $1 billion in back dues to the UN. This had been done in order to prod the UN into accomplishing the needed reforms. Strong was asked to accompany Annan to the White House in an attempt to obtain payment because Strong had a very close friend in the Clinton administration--Vice-President Al Gore. Both Strong and Gore are avid environmentalists and globalists. Of course, Gore is the author of his now famous environmental book, Earth in the Balance
Timothy Wirth
Ted Turner didn't want his $1 billion UN contribution to be wasted. He needed someone to administer the proper distribution of the donation. Timothy Wirth, serving as Under-Secretary of State for Global Affairs in the Clinton State Department, accepted the job. However, when we see how intertwined the U.S. and the UN really are, it becomes clear that, when Wirth left the U.S. State Department to administer the grant, he was still working with the same people toward the same goals.
Bill Clinton
Let's pause a moment to pull this web of power together. In 1992, Strobe Talbott wrote an article for Time magazine, entitled, "The Birth of the Global Nations." In the article he stated that U.S. sovereignty as we have known it will cease to exist in the 21st Century. He asserted that all nations would soon answer to a single global authority. But why should we care at all what Strobe Talbott says? Talbott has been very close to President Clinton for a long time. They were roommates while attending college as Rhodes Scholars in London. When Clinton took office in 1993, one of the first things that he did was to make Strobe Talbott Deputy Secretary of State. Talbott has been the key foreign policy advisor to Clinton throughout his entire administration. So one of the most powerful members of the U.S. State Department believes that United States" sovereignty is soon to be over!

When it comes, the U.S. assault on Iraq will explode as global spectacle, an awesome pyrotechnic display of rolling thunder and lightening death intended to shock and cow the entire planet. The effect, the planners fervently believe, will be comparable to that which occurred when cannon clashed with spears and arrows on the ever-expanding frontiers of European empire: incomprehensible devastation, soul-consuming terror, complete political disintegration, followed by abject submission. In the grand imperial scenario, the satraps and sultans of the Earth, heads bowed at angles of unmistakable subservience, will gather up their robes and beseech the Americans for life on any terms.
Iraq's oil is important, but not the real prize of war. If a sustained flow of Iraqi oil were so vital to the U.S. and global economy, the production infrastructure would not be put at such risk of immediate immolation. Iraq's oil facilities can burn as easily as did Kuwait's, in the last days of the previous Gulf War. Capitalism went on to boom and bubble in the Nineties.
Dick Cheney's Halliburton corporation and the rest of the pirate pack are ready and eager to do a multi-billion dollar, postwar makeover of Iraq's oil facilities, at U.S. taxpayer expense. Invoices will be submitted to American Occupation authorities - part of the "cost" of war that the White House refuses to "speculate" about.
Oil is overrated as the root cause of the impending conflagration. Saddam Hussein has always been eager to pump much more of it, at no higher price than the next guy, while the U.S. has strangled Iraqi production by every means at its disposal for over a decade.
The prize is nothing less than world domination: all the riches above and below the earth and seas.

That's the plan. The pirates are confident they can improvise the post war details at their leisure, later. If we search for the military or economic objectives of the conflict on anything so crude as a map, we have missed the point.
An epochal announcement
The Bush men intend to show the world what Armageddon looks like. The US intends to shatter Iraq "physically, emotionally and psychologically" by raining down on its people as many as 800 cruise missiles in two days.
The Pentagon battle plan aims not only to crush Iraqi troops, but also wipe out power and water supplies in the capital, Baghdad.

In fact, the correct definition of this corporate United States is
that it is a Timarchy, a municipality of subject citizens and their
rulers, a military aristocracy. Thus, the "democratic" elections of
2000 and 2002 were mere exercises of a municipal drama club. Because
the States -- which as Kent said, "are to be considered as moral
persons having a public will," -- no longer exist in any meaningful
form, the aristocrats who walk the pathways of power in Washington,

corporation of THE UNITED STATES of its manufacturing and heavy
industry, these corporate power-brokers are now being confronted with
revelations about their true business and true interests. Mr. Jim
Sinclair made the points very lucidly in an essay posted at
jsmineset.com, on February 13th, in regards to the Enron scandal:
"... the entire energy market seems to have imploded and most all
the public and private companies that were in it are no longer in
it -- in one way or another. The reason for this in my opinion is that
the Energy Derivative market never existed in the first place. It was
a money-laundering scheme upon which some legitimate dealers made
trades.
"When Enron and its 2000 international phony partnerships expired,
there was no energy market left. Remember all money-laundering
entities [must] finally burn the restaurant down. That is for real. It
has never been insurance fraud as the insurer thinks. It has always
been the final burial ground of 'money-laundering 101.'"
There can be no doubt that Sinclair is right. Enron was a massive
and well-constructed social organization, which gulled its own
employees into financing its activities, and which has gone bankrupt
in a cloud of scandal so thick it would take an X-ray laser beam to
cut through it all. Again and again, Enron's links to intelligence
agency operatives have been noted and discussed briefly, only to be
ignored by both the administrative employees who pretend to be
Congressmen and -women, and those federal employees who pretend to be
federal regulators. That makes it worth repeating: the present form of
the federal government is a Timarchy, a military aristocracy which

Anyone who has had any connection with British politics will know the election-night scene: the draughty hall; the trestle tables; the piles of ballot papers; the suspicious agents prowling, ready to holler if a solitary ballot is misplaced. The system is zero-tech, offers a near-ideal combination of secrecy and transparency and (Northern Ireland excepted) has produced a trivial number of failures since the secret ballot came in 130 years ago.
The United States, as we know, has been less fortunate, though it is considered rather churlish and passé these days to mention what happened in Florida, and anyway the system has been reformed: there will be no more butterfly ballots and pregnant chads. The US is spending billions of dollars to "upgrade" voting systems - switching to methods that are far less transparent and even more corruptible. Furthermore, Britain is thinking of following suit.
By 2004, most voters in the US may well be voting by touch-screen systems, provided by a handful of companies, mainly private. Routine oversight of the counting process is effectively impossible. Even in the event of a court challenge, there is no sure way of telling that the votes have been allocated correctly. I asked a spokesman for Diebold, one of the largest firms involved, how a losing candidate would know they had lost. "Our machines undergo a battery of tests undertaken by independent testing associations for logic and accuracy," he said.
Fine - in theory the machines are perfect: we all have computers that never go wrong, don't we? Unfortunately, there appears to be nothing to stop to a corrupt company, a corrupt official or a corrupt (or merely incompetent) programmer subverting the democratic will.
There has, naturally, been zilch coverage of this issue in the mainstream American press - because the White House hasn't mentioned it. But conspiracy theorists on the web (see, for instance, ecotalk.org and bartcop.com) are hard at work. The Florida election was, of course, a shambles again in the 2002 midterm election, especially in the primaries. The conspiracists, however, are concentrating on two other states.
One is Georgia, where all the votes in 2002 were cast on Diebold screens. The sitting Democratic senator and (to general astonishment) governor were both defeated in the election. Nine of Diebold's 12 directors are listed as Republican donors. The other case is Nebraska, where more than 80% of the votes last November were counted on machines produced by the leader in the field: ES & S. Nebraska handily re-elected its Republican senator, Chuck Hagel, who just happens to be the company's former chief executive and remains a major shareholder. I do not remotely suggest either election was rigged, though Charlie Matulka, Hagel's beaten Democratic opponent, has protested in a manner somewhat unusual for a candidate who only got 15%. This is probably all just paranoia, but the Paranoid party has as much right to participate in elections as anyone else - and to know how and why they have lost.

Government's path of secrecy

"A government operating in the shadow of secrecy stands in complete opposition to the society envisioned by the Framers of our Constitution," wrote Judge Damon Keith of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati last year. "When government begins closing doors, it selectively controls information rightfully belonging to the people. Selective information is misinformation."
The judge was condemning the Bush administration's policy of closing all immigration hearings for post-Sept. 11 detainees. However, his words could be a critique of the administration's penchant for secrecy on a broad front. Believing that the public is entitled only to information the government chooses to release, the president and his lieutenants are going to extraordinary lengths to limit the information made public by federal agencies. By sharply restricting public access to government employees, documents, hearings and meetings, the administration has thrown up barriers to traditional government watchdogs such as the press and public interest groups, and made itself far less accountable.
Some of the most troubling acts of secrecy include Vice President Dick Cheney's refusal to disclose to Congress details of the role oil companies played in his energy task force meetings and President Bush's decision to institute new restrictions on the release of the papers of former presidents. But the culture of closed doors pervades the administration.
Attorney General John Ashcroft could not have been much clearer in 2001 when he issued a directive to all federal agencies encouraging them to deny documents to the public that had been requested under the Freedom of Information Act. He promised to defend any challenges to those rejections in court. Under the Clinton administration, the policy had been just the opposite: provide as much information as possible as long as there is no "foreseeable harm" from the release.
But Ashcroft's Justice Department is obsessed with secrecy. He has refused to make public the names of hundreds of people detained on immigration charges and material witness warrants following the Sept. 11 attacks, even after multiple requests by members of Congress. And he has stonewalled Congress' request for information on how the FBI is implementing some of its new powers of surveillance and wiretapping under the USA Patriot Act. All that, in addition to the department's decision to impose a blanket closure of immigration hearings for post-Sept. 11 detainees, the constitutionality of which is still being challenged in the courts.
Since Bush became president, the number of documents being classified is up about 18 percent, and three more federal agencies have been given the power to create secret files.
Two dangerous impulses of government are at work: First is the desire to arrogate more power to the executive branch by refusing to acknowledge Congress' oversight role; second is the attempt to shut down public criticism and dissent by restricting access to the information needed to make intelligent assessments on programs and policies.
The Bush administration is leading us down a dangerous path, one where our government is far less interested in being responsive to the people than in self-protection and self-promotion.

Congressman Ron Paul (R-Tex) told the Washington Times that no member of Congress was allowed to read the first Patriot Act that was passed by the House on October 27, 2001. The first Patriot Act was universally decried by civil libertarians and Constitutional scholars from across the political spectrum. William Safire, while writing for the New York Times, described the first Patriot Act’s powers by saying that President Bush was “seizing dictatorial control.
On February 7, 2003 the Center for Public Integrity, a non-partisan public interest think-tank in DC, revealed the full text of the Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003. The classified document had been leaked to them by an unnamed source inside the Federal government. The document consisted of a 33-page section by section analysis of the accompanying 87-page bill.
*Note: On February 10, 2003 I discovered that not only was there a house version that had been covertly brought to Hastert, but that many provisions of the now public Patriot Act II had already been introduced as pork barrel riders on Senate Bill S. 22. Dozens of subsections and even the titles of the subsections are identical to those in the House version. This is very important because it catches the Justice Department in a bald-faced lie. The Justice Department claimed that the secret legislation brought into the House was only for study, and that at this time there was no intention to try and pass it. Now upon reading S. 22, it is clear that the leadership of the Senate is fully aware of the Patriot Act II, and have passed these riders out of their committees into the full bill. I spent two hours scanning through S. 22 and, let me tell you, it is a nightmare for anyone who loves liberty. It even contains the Our Lady of Peace Act that registers all gun owners. It bans the private sale of all firearms, creates a Federal ballistics database, and much more.
The bill itself is stamped “Confidential – Not for Distribution.” Upon reading the analysis and bill, I was stunned by the scientifically crafted tyranny contained in the legislation. The Justice Department Office of Legislative Affairs admits that they had indeed covertly transmitted a copy of the legislation to Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, (R-Il) and the Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney as well as the executive heads of federal law enforcement agencies.
It is important to note that no member of Congress was allowed to see the first Patriot Act before its passage, and that no debate was tolerate by the House and Senate leadership. The intentions of the White House and Speaker Hastert concerning Patriot Act II appear to be a carbon copy replay of the events that led to the unprecedented passage of the first Patriot Act.
There are two glaring areas that need to be looked at concerning this new legislation:
1. The secretive tactics being used by the White House and Speaker Hastert to keep even the existence of this legislation secret would be more at home in Communist China than in the United States. The fact that Dick Cheney publicly managed the steamroller passage of the first Patriot Act, insuring that no one was allowed to read it and publicly threatening members of Congress that if they didn’t vote in favor of it that they would be blamed for the next terrorist attack, is by the White House’s own definition terrorism. The move to clandestinely craft and then bully passage of any legislation by the Executive Branch is clearly an impeachable offence.
2. The second Patriot Act is a mirror image of powers that Julius Caesar and Adolf Hitler gave themselves. Whereas the First Patriot Act only gutted the First, Third, Fourth and Fifth Amendments, and seriously damaged the Seventh and the Tenth, the Second Patriot Act reorganizes the entire Federal government as well as many areas of state government under the dictatorial control of the Justice Department, the Office of Homeland Security and the FEMA NORTHCOM military command. The Domestic Security Enhancement Act 2003, also known as the Second Patriot Act is by its very structure the definition of dictatorship.
I challenge all Americans to study the new Patriot Act and to compare it to the Constitution, Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence. Ninety percent of the act has nothing to do with terrorism and is instead a giant Federal power-grab with tentacles reaching into every facet of our society. It strips American citizens of all of their rights and grants the government and its private agents total immunity.
Here is a quick thumbnail sketch of just some of the draconian measures encapsulated within this tyrannical legislation:
SECTION 501 (Expatriation of Terrorists) expands the Bush administration’s “enemy combatant” definition to all American citizens who “may” have violated any provision of Section 802 of the first Patriot Act. (Section 802 is the new definition of domestic terrorism, and the definition is “any action that endangers human life that is a violation of any Federal or State law.”) Section 501 of the second Patriot Act directly connects to Section 125 of the same act. The Justice Department boldly claims that the incredibly broad Section 802 of the First USA Patriot Act isn’t broad enough and that a new, unlimited definition of terrorism is needed.
Under Section 501 a US citizen engaging in lawful activities can be grabbed off the street and thrown into a van never to be seen again. The Justice Department states that they can do this because the person “had inferred from conduct” that they were not a US citizen. Remember Section 802 of the First USA Patriot Act states that any violation of Federal or State law can result in the “enemy combatant” terrorist designation.

Any international institution that votes to put Libya in charge of its Human Rights Commission and has Iraq in line to head its Disarmament Conference has sunk to such depths of moral depravity it should be driven from the world stage. This same institution, the United Nations, having no shame whatever, has decided the United States of America should build them a new skyscraper with an interest-free loan.
Recently it unveiled its plan for a top-to-bottom renovation of its current Manhattan-located, 38-floor building. The plans would also include building an additional 30-story tower, thus nearly doubling the UN headquarters' space. Cost of the project is estimated at $1.3 billion. The UN continually pleads poverty, but that is because there's never enough money to fund its self-imposed, ever-expanding agenda.
What to do? What does the UN always do when it needs money or anything else? It looks for that never-ending pot of gold at the end of the Potomac. After constantly bashing the United States for its selfish, capitalist greed, the benevolent socialists at the UN want Uncle Sam to float a loan. But not just a loan; they want an interest-free loan!
The arm-twisting has already begun as UN officials are rounding up support for the loan at the State Department and in Congress. According to reports, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan cornered President Bush about the issue when they met last November.

War Is Sell

"From a marketing point of view, you don't introduce new products in August," White House Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr. told the New York Times in September. Card was explaining what the Times characterized as a "meticulously planned strategy to persuade the public, the Congress, and the allies of the need to confront the threat from Saddam Hussein."
Officially, President George W. Bush is claiming that he sees war as an option of last resort, and many members of the American public seem to have taken him at his word. In reality, say journalists and others who have closely observed the key players in decision-making positions at the White House, they have already decided on war.
In November, key Pentagon advisor Richard Perle stunned British members of parliament when he told them that even a "clean bill of health" from UN chief weapons inspector Hans Blix would not stop a US attack on Iraq. "Evidence from one witness on Saddam Hussein's weapons program will be enough to trigger a fresh military onslaught," reported the Mirror of London, paraphrasing Perle's comments at an all-party meeting on global security.
"America is duping the world into believing it supports these inspections," said Peter Kilfoyle, a member of the British Labour party and a former British defense minister. "President Bush intends to go to war even if inspectors find nothing. This makes a mockery of the whole process and exposes America's real determination to bomb Iraq."
Even the US Central Intelligence Agency, hardly a pacifist organization, has come under pressure from White House and Pentagon hawks unhappy with the CIA's reluctance to offer intelligence assessments that would justify an invasion.
"The Pentagon is bringing relentless pressure to bear on the agency to produce intelligence reports more supportive of war with Iraq," reported Robert Dreyfuss in the American Prospect in December. "Morale inside the US national-security apparatus is said to be low, with career staffers feeling intimidated and pressured to justify the push for war."
Much of the pro-war information cited by the White House comes from the Iraqi National Congress (INC), a front group established in the early 1990s by the Rendon Group. (PR Watch's Fourth Quarter 2001 issue detailed the Rendon Group's role in creating the INC.)
"Most Iraq hands with long experience in dealing with that country's tumultuous politics consider the INC's intelligence-gathering abilities to be nearly nil," Dreyfuss stated. "The Pentagon's critics are appalled that intelligence provided by the INC might shape US decisions about going to war against Baghdad. At the CIA and at the State Department, Ahmed Chalabi, the INC's leader, is viewed as the ineffectual head of a self-inflated and corrupt organization skilled at lobbying and public relations, but not much else."
Focus, People, Focus
The techniques being used to sell a war in Iraq are familiar PR strategies. The message is developed to resonate with the targeted audiences through the use of focus groups and other types of market research and media monitoring. The delivery of the message is tightly controlled. Relevant information flows to the media and the public through a limited number of well-trained messengers, including seemingly independent third parties.
A seamless blend of private and public money and organizations are executing their war campaign in the face of a sinking US economy and increasing public opposition to attacking Iraq. But with a Republican-controlled Congress and a largely pliant corporate media, there is little to challenge the White House agenda. Its diplomatic and political maneuvers have been tightly choreographed in concert with a handful of right-wing think tanks, the newly concocted Committee for the Liberation of Iraq, and well connected PR and lobby firms that now dominate media coverage of US foreign policy in the Middle East.
According to the New York Times, intensive planning for the "Iraq rollout" began in July. Bush advisers checked the Congressional calendar for the best time to launch a "full-scale lobbying campaign." The effort started the day after Labor Day as Congress reconvened and Congressional leaders received invitations to the White House and the Pentagon for Iraq briefings with Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and CIA director George Tenet. White House communications aides scouted locations for the President's September 11 address, which served as a prelude to his militaristic speech to the United Nations Security Council.
The Washington Post reported in July that the White House had created an Office of Global Communications (OGC) to "coordinate the administration's foreign policy message and supervise America's image abroad." In September, the Times of London reported that the OGC would spend $200 million for a "PR blitz against Saddam Hussein" aimed "at American and foreign audiences, particularly in Arab nations skeptical of US policy in the region." The campaign would use "advertising techniques to persuade crucial target groups that the Iraqi leader must be ousted."
The Bush administration has not hesitated to use outright disinformation to bolster the case for war. In December, CBS 60 Minutes interviewed a former CIA agent who investigated and debunked the oft-mentioned report that September 11 airplane hijacker Mohammed Atta met with an Iraqi intelligence official in Prague several months before the deadly attacks on September 11. "Despite a lack of evidence that the meeting took place," the CBS report noted, "the item was cited by administration officials as high as Vice President Dick Cheney and ended up being reported so widely that two-thirds of Americans polled by the Council on Foreign Relations believe Iraq was behind the terrorist attacks of 9/11."
