Cheney Wants Surveillance Law Expanded

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Dick Cheney prodded Congress on Wednesday to extend and broaden an expiring surveillance law, saying "fighting the war on terror is a long-term enterprise" that should not come with an expiration date.

"We're reminding Congress that they must act now," Cheney told the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. The law, which authorizes the administration to eavesdrop on e-mails and phone calls to and from suspected terrorists, expires on Feb. 1. Congress is bickering over terms of its extension.

On Tuesday, Senate Republicans blocked an effort by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to extend the stopgap Protect America Act without expanding it, raising stakes for an expected showdown in the Senate later this week on a new version of the law.

"This cause is bigger than the quarrels of party and the agendas of politicians," Cheney said. "And if we in Washington, all of us, can only see our way clear to work together, then the outcome should not be in doubt."

Congress hastily adopted the stopgap act last summer in the face of warnings from the administration about dangerous gaps in the government's ability to gather intelligence in the Internet age.

Administration allies in Congress not only want the expiring law made permanent but amended to give telephone companies and other communications providers immunity from being sued for helping the government eavesdropping and other intelligence-gathering efforts.

Cheney said such providers "face dozens of lawsuits."

"The intelligence community doesn't have the facilities to carry out the kind of international surveillance needed to defend this country since 9-11. In some situations, there is no alternative to seeking assistance from the private sector. This is entirely appropriate," Cheney said.

At the White House, press secretary Dana Perino defended the proposal to protect phone companies from liability. "These are companies who helped their country right after 9-11," she said.

At the heart of the controversy is whether the government's wireless surveillance program violated provisions of the original FISA law that requires warrants for wiretaps whenever one of the parties involved in the communication resides in the United States.

Cheney also said the administration "feels strongly that an updated FISA law should be made permanent, not merely extended again. ... There is no sound reason to pass critical legislation like the Protect America Act and slap an expiration date on it."

Reid plans to bring to the Senate floor on Thursday competing versions of the legislation.

If a bill is not approved then, Reid said he would require the Senate to work through the weekend to get a bill passed.

The original FISA law requires the government to get permission from a special court to listen in on the phone calls and e-mails of people in the United States. Changes in communications technology mean many purely foreign to foreign communications now pass through the United States and therefore require the government to get court orders to intercept them.

The Protect America Act, adopted in August, eased that restriction. Privacy and civil liberties advocates say it went too far, giving the government far more power to eavesdrop on American communications without court oversight.

Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul enjoys yet another second place finish in a state caucus. This time it's Louisiana.

The Louisiana contest, however, is not a battleground state in the race for the Republican nomination as candidates have focused on bigger prizes in South Carolina and Florida.

Fred Thompson dropping out of the race helped boost Paul's vote count.

If Thompson had still been in the race, a Louisiana political source explained to NR, his state delegate strength in Louisiana would have been enough to potentially get him all of the state's 47 national delegates. The one big problem, though, is that he dropped out only hours before he finally won something.

John McCain won the state Tuesday.

Louisiana voters have become disenchanted with its state's stance against online gambling. Ron Paul is against Internet gambling prohibition.

Chemical Food Additives - Are They Slowly Killing Our Children?

Let me start by saying a chemical additive doesn't necessarily 'appear' to be a problem immediately after ingestion. Quite often the effects are cumulative; a gradual build-up in the body produces roller-coaster days, some good, some bad. Some children are more sensitive to food chemicals and display immediate effects soon after ingestion of additives, colours in particular. In small amounts additives are not harmful. Effects are dose related and, tragically, dose for weight, children are consuming several times more additives than the acceptable daily intake (ADI). Before we get into the details of the most common problem foods, it is necessary to understand the testing and approval process, with emphasis on those factors that may confer the level of risk of toxic additives in infants and young children's diets.

The standard application and approval process put forward by the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) includes a requirement that the manufacturers provide sufficient scientific evidence to support the safety of an additive. Generally, additives are tested on two species of animal. Test animals are then observed for any effects on DNA, detectable links to cancer, major vital organ damage, etc. If any signs of the aforementioned effects are observed at high doses then a non-observable effect level is established by slowly reducing the level of additive until the animal displays no 'noticeable effect'. This reduced level is considered a 'safe level' for human consumption. The concept of a safe level is based on the average adult intake. At present, there is no separate ADI for children. Consequently, dose for weight our children are getting horrific amounts of these toxic additives in everyday snacks and meals (1).

What is even more disturbing about this approval process is that additives are tested in isolation. The reality is humans consume innumerable and frightening cocktails of additives in combination.

How these additives react in combination has only become of interest to scientific fields in recent years. In March 2006, the Soil Association and Organix brands presented the results of a three-year study, on the effects of combining four common food additives. The results propose that the tested combinations can have a neurotoxic effect.

The toxic effects on nerve cells were examined by using a combination of the following four common food additives: E133 Brilliant Blue with E621 monosodium glutamate (MSG) and E104 Quinoline Yellow with E951 L-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine methyl ester.

The mixtures of the additives had a much more potent effect on nerve cells than each additive on its own. The effect on cells was up to four times greater when Brilliant Blue and MSG were combined, and up to seven times greater when Quinoline Yellow and Aspartame were combined.

The study shows that when the nerve cells were exposed to MSG and Brilliant Blue or Aspartame and Quinoline Yellow the additives stopped the nerve cells from normal growth and interfered with proper signalling systems.

The experiments were done in laboratory conditions and the additives were combined in concentrations that theoretically reflect the compound that enters the bloodstream after a typical children's snack and drink (2).

Risk of toxic additives, in isolation or in combination, is evidently most high among infants and children. Age is an important susceptibility factor, with infants and young children being most vulnerable to chemical carcinogens. Scientific risk assessment data suggests that infants (newborns) have a limited capability to detoxify due to premature development of the liver and drug-metabolising enzymes, furthermore their extremely small body weight may provoke toxicity.

The fact that young children have higher nutritional requirements, smaller body masses and their diet is less varied than those of adults suggests that they may have the greatest susceptibility to toxic effects. For example, their soft drink and dairy consumption alone may be as much as 16 times greater than that of adults (3).

There are many more factors that promote increased susceptibility of infants and young children to toxic additives, all of which have been recognised in health and science fields for well over a decade but has not been given a moment of thought when determining ADI levels for additives! To date, all additives are passed for approval without being tested for any effects they may have on children's behaviour and learning.

Clearly, it is up to the general population of adults to be calling for stricter regulation and more caution to be taken with food additives in an effort to protect the vulnerability of future generations. Children have little control over what they eat, they are less informed than the adults around them and therefore rely mainly on adults for making informed decisions and taking precautions to protect their precious lives. As a parent/carer/teacher every effort should be made to identify toxicities that could potentially harm our children and put a stop to the plethora of toxic additives going into their tiny bodies.

YOU SHOULD BE WARY OF THIS MARKET REBOUND
January 24, 2008 -- IT'S a miracle - two days in a row.

The stock market was going to hell again yesterday when suddenly - out of a cloud of dust and a hearty Hi-Ho Silver - someone came to the rescue.

You are going to read elsewhere that investors, at precisely 12:44 p.m. yesterday, got the urge to buy enormous amounts of equities because of some mass and simultaneous belief that stocks had gone down enough.

And you'll hear words like "capitulation" - which is the "I surrender" white flag that the pros say is the sign that the market is down enough and about to turn up.

I don't happen to share those opinions.

Let's just say that I don't believe in magic any more now than I did when I warned you in December that stocks would be up against it when cranky auditors made banks own up to their mistakes in year-end reports.

That was about 1,500 Dow points ago.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see stocks get back on track and the economy make a right turn onto Easy St. as quickly as possible. Who wouldn't?

But I'm not doing my job if I pretend that everything is suddenly alright because some guy in Washington decided to cut interest rates in a frantic move that - at best - won't be felt by the economy for months.

So I won't lie to you.

There's a lot of trouble ahead, starting with next week.

That's when the Fed meets for its regular meeting and when an insatiable Wall Street is expecting yet another cut in interest rates. The problem is, next Friday is when the Labor Department is scheduled to report employment statistics for January and that figure could be, as we are allowed to say only in a tabloid, f-ugly. More on that in another column.

Corporate earnings are another landmine next week. A hundred of the Standard & Poor's 500 companies are scheduled to report earnings, as are nine components of the Dow Jones industrial index, including American Express, McDonalds and Boeing.

With a stock market this skittish, any one of these reports could cause convulsions.

But the real problem may come in a few weeks when banks will be forced by the Securities & Exchange Commission and the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) to acknowledge to the government in annual reports just how much (or little) some of their esoteric securities are really worth.

"Fair value" accounting probably sounded like a good idea back in bubble land but right now it's a pointy object aimed at a half-deflated balloon.

Next month is also when a good amount of Citigroup's Structured Investments Vehicles are maturing, probably with little hope that investors will re-up for another term. Not surprisingly Citi, along with a handful of European banks, continue to be the subject of distressing rumors in the investment community.

With all that sludge coming at us, who could have been brave enough these past two days to step in front of a falling market - or, as they say on Wall Street, catch a falling knife? The Dow did, after all, have a 625-point reversion in yesterday's session alone.

Here's where I'd like to in troduce you to Robert Heller.

Heller was a gover nor of the Federal Reserve during the 1989 stock market collapse. I've brought him up be fore in this column because right after he left the Fed, Heller gave a speech proposing the rigging of the stock market during emergencies.

The speech was published in the Oct. 27, 1989 Wall Street Journal.

Heller was speaking of a situation just like ours today, where the Fed is being forced to cut interest rates even though there's little indication that people want to borrow.

Heller said "instead of flooding the entire economy with liquidity, and thereby increasing the danger of inflation, the Fed could support the stock market directly by buying market averages in the futures market, thus stabilizing the market as a whole."

"The stock market is certainly not too big for the Fed to handle," Heller added.

I've written about this operation before.

I've also written about how Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson has been very vocal about the fact that he has re-energized something called The President's Working Group on Financial Market - better known as the Plunge Protection Team. The Working Group, also formed in 1989, reportedly had an emergency session over the weekend.

Was the President's Working Group the Lone Ranger of this market? And was the group riding Heller's idea?

We will probably never know. But rigged markets have a tendency to be unstable. So if this one is being supported by Heller's notion, watch out.

Creating conflict makes fiendish sense. If they were to declare their true intention, they would meet opposition from all sides. Instead they create and hide behind opposing forces and manipulate the outcome ensuring that "true believers" (the capable & uncorrupted) die in the process. Everyone is so busy fighting, they can't see the real foe and the real agenda.

I'll start by mentioning some random conflicts that fit this paradigm. (Research them and see if I am right.) Then I'll cite some more references to show that this strategy is deliberate.

I suspect the Labor, Women's and US Gay and Negro Civil Rights Movement all fit this pattern. They were all sponsored by the bankers,and run by Masonic and Communist Jews or their dupes. While they addressed legitimate injustices, their real purpose was to sow division.

Harold Rosenthal is credible when he says: "Through our national bank, the Federal Reserve, we extend book credit which we create from nothing to all local banks ... Creating conflict makes fiendish sense. If they were to declare their true intention, they would meet opposition from all sides. Instead they create and hide behind opposing forces and manipulate the outcome ensuring that "true believers" (the capable & uncorrupted) die in the process. Everyone is so busy fighting, they can't see the real foe and the real agenda.

I'll start by mentioning some random conflicts that fit this paradigm. (Research them and see if I am right.) Then I'll cite some more references to show that this strategy is deliberate.

CONFLICTS

I suspect the Labor, Women's and US Gay and Negro Civil Rights Movement all fit this pattern. They were all sponsored by the bankers,and run by Masonic and Communist Jews or their dupes. While they addressed legitimate injustices, their real purpose was to sow division.

Harold Rosenthal is credible when he says: "Through our national bank, the Federal Reserve, we extend book credit which we create from nothing to all local banks ... [Thus] we bring industry, management and labor into our debt...and pit management against labor so they will never unite and attack us and usher in a debt-free industrial utopia."

Global Warming is yet another created conflict. The Club of Rome talked about using it as a fabricated "enemy" 17 years ago. SECRET SOCIETIES

It appears that the Illuminati bankers sponsored the liberal and socialist (revolutionary) movements of the last 300 years in order to wrest power from the nobility and church, and to control society through the guise of "liberal democracy."

In 1794 the Duke of Brunswick, issued a Manifesto based on confiscated Illuminati documents. He said, "The ferment that reigns among the people is their work....They began by casting odium on religion..They invented the rights of man ...and urged the people to wrest from their princes the recognition of these supposed rights. The plan they formed for breaking all social ties and destroying all order was revealed in their speeches and acts. CONCLUSION

Our political life is essentially an illusion. As early as 1823, Hoene Wronski wrote: "Secret societies are detached into groups distinct and apparently opposed, professing respectively and in turn the most contrary opinions of the day, so as to direct, apart and with confidence, all parties, political, religious, economic, and literary. They, in order to receive common direction, are again united to an unknown center...an Unknown Supreme Committee who governs the world." ("Light-bearers of Darkness", p.2)

The lesson is not to avoid political activity, but to be very selective. The world is in the thrall of a satanic cult. The correct paradigm is humanity versus this cult, its agents and dupes. Unfortunately,these are often the people society considers a "success."

20th Century - Pt 2

Adolph Hitler was joined at the hip with American big business jointly with the British royal family. They financed him as a bulwark, they thought, against the Soviets. The Moscow government was perceived by them as a great threat to the West.


The British royals were and are heavily German and were originally Von Battenberg. Following World War One, they changed their name to the House of Windsor, which sounds harmless. King Edward 8th abdicated the throne in the 1930s with the cover story that he wanted to marry a commoner. In fact, it was because he was very pro-Hitler and this would cause trouble with war clouds gathering. As the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, they lived mostly in the Bahamas, and he was the Governor there. He treasonously permitted Nazi U-boats to refuel there and be able to sink U.S. and British ships. After all, the British royal family was tied to the Nazis. See: John L. Spivak's book, "Secret Armies, The New Techniques of Nazi Warfare" [Starling Press, N.Y. N.Y., 1939], pages 17-30.


World War Two started when the Germans invaded Poland, September, 1939. Three weeks AFTER that, Rockefeller's Standard Oil of New Jersey and the German chemical octopus, I.G. Farben, made an unholy deal to share patents, royalties, and deals all during the war via neutral South American countries like Columbia. To make it seem legal, they arranged to fraudulently back-date the deal to THREE WEEKS BEFORE THE WAR STARTED. Who brokered and arranged this? Why, Joseph P. Kennedy, the pro-Hitler U.S. Ambassador to London until October, 1940, and "Founding Father" of the Kennedy clan. See: "The Crime and Punishment of I.G. Farben" by Joseph Borkin. I.G. Farben had a secret arrangement with the top U.S. Military brass, not to bomb any of Farben's facilities during the war. At the close of the conflict, Farben's facilities were 93 per cent untouched and intact.

With Joseph P. Kennedy having a strong financial link to Hollywood, he ORDERED some 50 of the leading screenwriters NOT to write anything about the Nazi concentration camps. See: Ben Hecht's book, "Child of the Century", Simon & Schuster, N.Y. N.Y., 1954, page 520.


"The Cliveden set" of the British aristocracy wanted peace and collaboration with the Nazis. [Jacqueline Bouvier Auchincloss Kennedy's family were close to that group.] Hitler's top aide, Rudolph Hess flew to Scotland on a peace mission shortly after the war started. He was murdered by British Intelligence on behalf of the anti-Cliveden set and a double inserted instead. That double for Rudolph Hess was designated a war criminal after World War Two and was kept in Spandau Prison until he was way past 90 years of age. He was never allowed to write anything down or communicate with anyone. Hess's wife once proclaimed it was not her husband that was in jail because the jail inmate did not have her husband's tell-tale battle scar from World War One. To protect the secret about the peace overture, British Intelligence murdered the Hess double in jail.


In 1962, after Joseph P. Kennedy's son, John F. Kennedy, had become President, the President and his brother, Robert F. Kennedy, as U.S. Attorney General, arranged for hundreds of millions of dollars of Nazi alien property, still in the hands of the U.S. Government, to be returned to Nazi war criminals by way of a Swiss front, Interhandel. See: New York Times, September 21, 22, and 24, 1964.


Some contend these treasonous dealings by the Kennedys justified the "patriotic" political assassinations of President Kennedy, and then later, his brother Bobby, each murder falsely blamed on a "lone assassin". How far into the next century will one have to wait for the truth? The American CIA has used dozens of Nazi war criminals as consultants, particularly on how to cover up political murders and how to snuff out material eyewitnesses to the same.


A magazine called "The National Tattler",before they ceased publication, had a hard-hitting story, February 22, 1976, showing how Nazi war criminals after World War Two, run an international secret police group called Interpol, which specializes in hunting for people with Jewish surnames, often fingering them for minor offenses. In the 1970s, in Chicago, Cook County Undersheriff, Ross V. Randolph, was Interpol's key man in the Windy City. For many years, holding a top Post-War position also with Nazi-war-criminal-run Interpol, was FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover.


As we stated in Part One of "Great Secrets of the 20th Century", "1912- the Britibsh ship TITANIC sunk moreso from an internal explosion in the coal bunker than from hitting an iceberg. Those who produced the most recent version of the movie "Titanic", viewed, in a special submarine, the remains of the ship on the bottom of the Atlantic, off of Newfoundland. They reportedly noticed the side of the ship showed there had been a massive internal explosion in the vicinity of the coal bunker. Was it sabotage? Knowledgeable sources contend the ship, on its maiden voyage, had been the target of blackmail and espionage intrigue implicating England and Germany....The movie producers, in a re-make of a prior movie on the Titanic sinking, spent some 200 million dollars in the production. They were not about to risk that by raising the questions of the internal explosion requiring a revision of history books."

Some believe the Titanic was purposely steered into an iceberg in a vain attempt to save the huge ship after a mysterious explosion in the coal bunkers, for which the British quietly blamed the Germans. British Intelligence returned the favor 25 years later by sabotaging the German dirigible, "Hindenburg", the largest rigid airship ever constructed. It was of conventional Zeppelin design. In 1936, the Hindenburg inaugurated commercial air service across the North Atlantic by carrying over one thousand passengers on ten scheduled round trips between Germany and the U.S.

On May 6, 1937, while landing at Lakehurst, New Jersey, the Hindenburg burst into flames and was completely destroyed, killing 36 of the 97 onboard. It had been inflated with highly volatile hydrogen gas. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his business cronies had an armlock monopoly control on the relatively safe lighter-than-air gas, helium, produced in the U.S. but not made available to the Germans.

Even the British Encyclopaedia Britannica raised the question that the Hindenburg may have been the victim of sabotage. [Online, under the title "Hindenburg", you can see it as www.britannica.com]

In December, 1941, the U.S. entered World War Two when Germany declared war on U.S. The pro-Hitler Mellon family of Pittsburgh, and their Aluminum Company of America, ALCOA, for 6 months thereafter refused to step up aluminum production urgently needed for production of U.S. warplanes. Rockefellers' Standard Oil of New Jersey, tied to I.G. Farben by patent deals, treasonously refused to go into synthetic rubber production needed after Japan's invasion of Southeast Asia and such, cutting off natural rubber production. Rockefeller did not want to violate the arrangement with Farben, war or no war. Other firms had to hurry-up development of a synthetic rubber by a different method, in effect, having to re-invent the wheel because of Rockefellers treachery.

Some in the U.S. mass media, such as the Chicago Tribune, were tied to Hitler and the Nazis. As shown by George Seldes' book in 1943, "Facts and Fascism", pages 212-228 [In Fact, Inc., N.Y., 1943.] The Chicago Tribune during the War defied warimte censorship and endangered American troops by printing U.S. military secrets.


In the 1970s, boss of both the Chicago Sun-Times and sister publication Chicago Daily News [now defunct], was James Hogue, Jr. His father had been the key lawyer representing the left-overs of Nazi war industry. In the law library you can look up: Farbenfabriken Bayer, A.G. versus Sterling Drug, Inc., Volume 148 Federal Supplement, at page 735. Hogue's predecessor as boss when the two papers were owned by Field Enterprises was the reputed pro-Hitler Bailey K. Howard [his middle name tied to Nazi industry].

In the main ballroom of one of the older hotels, downtown Chicago, in 1976, I conducted the first major seminar in the U.S. about Nazi war criminals living quietly and secretly in the U.S. with the blessings of the American CIA and U.S.Military Intelligence. For that purpose I had scoured bookstores all over and gathered together a huge collection of little-known books on the subject. Strange, but the Jewish aristocracy which got along well with Hitler in Nazi Germany and with pro-Nazi big business in the U.S., boycotted my seminar and tried to blockade my efforts. About the same time, when Nazi-hunter Simon Wiesenthal from Austria visited Chicago and was to hold a press conference, look what happened.

The press conference was to be held in what was then named, the downtown building called the "Covenant Club", a key word in Judaism and the Old Testament. That same aristocracy arranged with top Chicago police officials to remove me under threat of arrest. Yet, I had not yet, outside the door of the press conference, uttered a single word, not even "hello". With the police brass, a young Rabbi came alongside my wheelchair, and said "Shush, don't say a single word, Mr. Skolnick, go with the police." I whispered, "Rabbi, why is this happening to me? I am one of the most well-informed on Nazi war criminals in the U.S." He simply repeated, "Mr.Skolnick, do not say a single word, go with the police officials."

A friend of Simon Wiesenthal, who knew me, arranged for him to call me and I taped an interview with him. "Mr. Skolnick, I am not in charge of these arrangements", Wiesenthal said. I responded, "Mr. Wiesenthal, your local people wanted to put me in jail just for being there. I had not uttered a single word to anyone. Why?" He answered, "I am sorry this happened, Mr. Skolnick." I asked what I thought was a proper and good question from a knowledgeable researcher like me, "Mr Wiesenthal, is it true that you are close to the British royal family and German royalty, and aided the OSS and CIA?" And he sheepishly answered, "Mr. Skolnick, it is true but I cannot go into that, I am a guest in your country." The OSS pre-dated the CIA.

While in Chicago, Mr. Wiesenthal was set to speak at a large synagogue. A reliable source called me in advance to tell me, "Mr. Skolnick, I happen to know, if you so much as show your face anywhere near that synagogue, a large contingent of police has already been alerted to arrest you." Anguished, I asked "Why is this happening?" And he responded, "Sherman, you are unacceptable to the aristocracy and you know it." I discussed with him the strange situation. A former Justice Department official was offering me the current names and addresses of thousands of Nazi war criminals living in the U.S., many in violation of immigration laws. He wanted, however, four and a half thousand dollars for the data. I had contacted an official of the B'Nai B'Rith who I knew. I was shocked to be told that the top brass of that purported Jewish organization did not wish such a list to be made public. So, instead, the Chicago Tribune paid the price, obtained the secret list, and buried the story.


Penthouse Magazine, May, 1976, told about top officials of DuPont and General Motors being tied to Hitler and the Nazis. Anthony Sutton, in his heavily documented book, "Wall St. and the Rise of Hitler", shows how General Electric sponsored Hitler in 1933. During World War Two, General Electric's plants in Nazi Germany were immune from bombing. So, at the end of the war, the Germans had no shortage of electrical equipment. Who arranged that immunity with the top brass of the U.S. Military?

And the Jesuits helped Nazi war criminals escape using, for example, Vatican passports. See: the book, "Aftermath" by Ladislas Farago, Avon Books [[paperback], 1975, pages 185-186, 184-187. And then there is the book by John Cornwell, "Hitler's Pope, the Secret History of Pius XII", Penguin Putnam, Inc., N.Y. N.Y.,1999.

The highly secretive German firm, Bertelsmann AG, and their global media empire, includes Random House, Bantam Doubleday Dell, and reportedly they are sizeable owners of American Online, known as AOL.COM, the online service. As stated in Nation Magazine, November 8, 1999, "Contrary to the company's official history, Bertelsmann cooperated with the Nazis in the late thirties and early forties, publishing a range of Hitlerian propaganda [see Hersch Fischler and John Friedman, "Bertelsmann's Nazi Past", December 28, 1998."

Notice this strange situation: The Bertelsmann Foundation is closely linked to Bertelsmann AG. As the Nation Magazine stated in the same article, "On October 30 in Atlanta, the Anti-Defamation League, self-described as the world's leading organization against anti-Semitism, will honor the Bertelsmann Foundation". ADL is part of B'Nai B'Rith. Bertelsmann Foundation donated about one million dollars to ADL.

In 1970, I tried, to no avail, to expose ADL as spying on fellow Jews and others in the Peace Movement FOR FBI. That was before public access Cable TV, before Internet, before widespread talk radio. In more recent years, in and out of Courts, ADL has been exposed as primarily an apparent spy operation.

Another very deep, dark secret of the 20th Century, is how some Chief Rabbis---certainly not all of them---operated in countries around Nazi Germany. In Poland, for example, these purported holymen were the community bankers. The ordinary people not having local banks available, such as in the U.S., they entrusted them with their money and valuables. And these Chief Rabbis, too often, told their people, after the invasion by the Germans, after 1939, "Shush, quiet, say nothing, get on the train. The Germans want you to work on the farm".


The ordinary Jews were fed these fairy tales. The trains took them to places like Auschwitz where many perished, having been worked to death as slave laborers for I.G. Farben and other Nazi indusry. Some concentration camp survivors I have known in Chicago have given me eyewitness accounts. They claim the grandchildren of these Chief Rabbis are big dealers in real estate and other businesses in the Chicago-area, with the treasures stolen by their Chief Rabbi grandfathers from fellow Jews, who naively believed what they were told, and got on the train "for the farm".


"You know who they are! Sue them! Expose them! The hour is late. You are 80 years old. What are you waiting for?" I have pleaded. My offer to volunteer my expertise on legal research has so far not been answered or accepted. In vain, I want this particular Great Secret of the 20th Century to be a matter of undisputed court record.

Lawyers Embrace Climate Change Practice

Jan. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Lawyers are becoming some of the best-paid environmentalists.

Twenty of the 100 highest-grossing U.S. law firms have started practices advising companies on climate change, according to a Bloomberg survey of the firms' Web sites. The attorneys help clients finance clean-energy projects and lobby Congress, typically billing $500 to $700 an hour.

Firms including Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, Heller Ehrman and Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton joined the global warming cause as real-estate and structured-finance attorneys lost jobs to the worst U.S. housing slump in 27 years. The move into climate-change law is gaining traction as Congress considers a mandatory carbon market to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

``Since the elections last November, climate change has had a higher profile as a political issue,'' said Paul Gutermann, co- leader of Washington-based Akin Gump's group, which comprises 50 of the firm's 1,023 attorneys.

Gutermann's team is helping clients including PG&E Corp. push U.S. lawmakers to establish a market that uses so-called carbon credits to penalize heavy polluters financially. Senators John Warner and Joseph Lieberman introduced a bill inspired by Europe's carbon market, and attorneys predict some legislation will pass after President George W. Bush, who opposes mandatory caps on emissions, leaves office in a year.

Global warming, driven by heat-trapping gases, is causing Arctic ice to melt and sea levels to rise, a United Nations panel of scientists said last year.

International Action

International reaction has sparked interest in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, making energy use more efficient and adding to non-polluting power sources.

Baker & McKenzie, a Chicago-based firm with 3,335 lawyers, was a pioneer, creating a climate-change group a decade ago. It became profitable after two years, said Richard Saines, who heads the U.S. part of the practice.

The 60-lawyer team brought in estimated revenue of $15 million to $20 million in 2007, Saines said. The firm's total revenue in 2006 was $1.52 billion, according to the trade magazine American Lawyer.

``We saw this as one of the key international-law issues that would affect U.S.-based multinationals,'' Saines said. ``And that is now the case.''

Saines and others wouldn't disclose how much they bill.

Hourly rates for climate-change partners at the biggest law firms in the largest U.S. cities are typically $500 to $700, said Chuck Wehland, an environmental partner at Washington-based Jones Day, which started a practice in 2001.

Lawyers' Fees

In the Midwest and Pacific Northwest, attorneys more often charge $300 to $500, said Rick Glick, president of the American College of Environmental Lawyers. The range is in line with fees for attorneys in other practice areas, said Edward Zaelke, a partner in the 28-person renewable-energy practice at New York- based Chadbourne & Parke.

PG&E paid Akin Gump $400,000 for lobbying Congress in the first half of 2007, according to a federal disclosure statement. Not all the activity was climate-related and the team did more than lobby, Gutermann said. He declined to elaborate.

Companies in all U.S. sectors are turning to lawyers to help them build systems to monitor, report and verify carbon credits, lawyers say.

The world carbon-trading market tripled to about $30 billion between 2005 and 2006, according to the World Bank. Such a market in the U.S. may reach as much as $300 billion by 2020, Peter Orszag, director of the Congressional Budget Office, said in U.S. House testimony last year.

European Model

The model proposed by Warner, a Virginia Republican, and Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut, is similar to the European Union's emissions program. Heavy polluters must buy credits to comply, while cleaner companies can profit by selling them.

``The idea is you let the people who are doing the polluting find the most efficient way to reduce pollution,'' said Robert Zwirb, a derivatives lawyer at New York-based Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft. ``If one utility can do it more cheaply than another, they engage in a trade. It's similar to swaps, only instead of dealing with interest rates, you're dealing with greenhouse gases.''

Akin Gump started its group two months ago with lawyers from existing practices expert on the environment, energy litigation, investments, project finance and public policy. San Francisco- based Heller Ehrman created its multidisciplinary team a year ago. Sheppard Mullin started a 50-member practice in May.

Growing Market

Building on existing clients, Los Angeles-based Sheppard Mullin has produced a ``substantial influx of work'' on land use, compliance and energy projects, said Randolph Visser, who heads a climate group comprised of 50 of the firm's 517 lawyers.

Customers include transportation companies in the Port of Los Angeles and FirmGreen Energy Inc., a closely held Newport Beach, California, developer of clean technology that the law firm is helping to negotiate a $25 million investment by Morgan Stanley.

``These are evolving marketplaces that require scrutiny by law firms to make sure we are in compliance and to take advantage of marketing opportunities,'' said FirmGreen Chief Executive Officer Steven Wilburn. ``If you just look at the hourly rate, it seems hard to justify. But if you look at the overall business plan, it's a cost you have to plan for.'' Wilburn would not disclose how much FirmGreen pays attorneys.

Climate-change attorneys also advise private-equity firms and hedge funds on clean-energy projects.

Energy Investments

Worldwide investments in sustainable energy sources such as wind, solar and water power rose 43 percent to $70.9 billion in 2006, according to a UN report.

In the U.S., more than $4 billion was invested in wind projects alone, according to Chadbourne's Zaelke, who specializes in financing and developing wind farms.

One of Zaelke's clients, John Deere Renewables, has invested more than $500 million since 2005 in community wind farms in seven states. The company, part of the financial services arm of Des Moines, Iowa-based Deere & Co., gets advice on supply agreements, project development and tax structures, said David Drescher, general manager of John Deere Wind Energy.

``They've been to a lot of wind farms,'' Drescher said.

Firefighter: Rudy Ran Like Coward On 9/11

Families of firefighters killed in the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center rallied in Orlando Tuesday in anticipation of the state's upcoming Republican primary. Unfortunately for Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, the firefighters are not in his corner.

"We want America to know that [the Giuliani campaign] is lying to America and to the American pubic," said Jim Riches, a deputy chief in the New York Fire Department, "telling all of Florida that the New York City Fire Department backs him, when that's another lie."

Firefighters and their families vowed to dog the former New York mayor at all of his Florida campaign stops because the state figures prominently in Giuliani's big-state primary strategy. The protesters think that Giuliani was aware that firefighters who responded to the World Trade Center attack were carrying defective radios and did not hear the order to evacuate.

"He didn't prepare us before, during, or after," says Riches.

Giuliani has campaigned strongly on his leadership during the attacks on New York, claiming he is the best suited to prevent an "Islamic terrorist war against us." But the firefighters were quick to question that courage.

"Yeah, the decision he made was, which direction he was going to run," says Riches. "And he ran north, and that's all he did."

The Giuliani campaign labeled the display a misleading, partisan attack. The former mayor is also emphasizing his ability to deal with the economy, distancing himself from the 9/11 pitch.

$696B Military Spending Bill Goes To Bush

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate approved a revised military spending bill on Tuesday and sidestepped a veto showdown with President Bush.

The 91-to-3 vote sends the $696 billion measure, which includes a 3.5 percent raise for troops, to Mr. Bush for his expected signature.

The president had rejected an earlier version of the bill because of a provision that would have guaranteed that victims of state-sponsored abuse could sue a foreign government in court and collect judgments by seizing its assets inside the United States. Mr. Bush said that would have exposed the new Iraqi government to potentially costly lawsuits over abuse under Saddam Hussein.

The administration estimated that Iraq had more than $25 billion of assets invested in the United States that could be tied up in litigation.

Democrats reluctantly revised the measure to allow Mr. Bush to grant immunity to Iraq, as long as he determines that doing so promotes Iraqi reconstruction and that the Iraqi government remains a “reliable ally” in the fight against terrorism.

The House passed the new bill last week, 369 to 46.

The measure, which also includes money for veterans benefits, makes the 3.5 percent salary increase retroactive to Jan. 1.

Jim Cramer the CNBC host of the show Mad Money has stated that there should be an investigation into the Federal Reserve. In a video interview posted on TheStreet.Com, Cramer criticized Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke for a series of interest rate cuts and even went as far to say that the Federal Reserve has been behind a great many of the economic booms and busts. The majority of the establishment press has been afraid to criticize the Federal Reserve and speak these intolerable truths. Cramer should be commended for having the courage to speak out against this criminal private central bank. There is no question that there should be an investigation into the Federal Reserve considering that it has operated in a very secretive fashion and have dramatically devalued the nation's currency ever since its inception in 1913.


Bluntly speaking, the Federal Reserve’s interest rate cuts are criminal in nature. They increase the money supply as a short term economic fix but sacrifice the value of the U.S. Dollar in the long run. Each time the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates it lowers the value of the U.S. Dollar which robs people’s bank accounts without them even knowing it. This is the inflation tax that Ron Paul has referred to on many occasions. Sure, cutting interest rates might make the stock market numbers look better, but by continuing to cut interest rates like Bernanke has done which devalues the monetary unit everything is valued in only means that the day of reckoning will be that much worse. Amazingly enough, the Federal Reserve is actually considering another interest rate cut of 50 basis points next week. The rationale behind this is very strange, as they should be hiking interest rates higher in order to save the value of the U.S. Dollar. It almost appears as if Bernanke has no intention of rescuing the U.S. Dollar and is content to delay what will be a certain economic crash of epic proportions. Regional economic integration has been one of the major goals of the elite financial establishment, so it looks all the more likely that they are content to destroy the U.S. Dollar and introduce a regional currency to replace it.

It appears as if Cramer understands what is happening with the economy and doesn’t care what the establishment thinks of him. He has passionately criticized the Federal Reserve on CNBC several times and praised Ron Paul for his views on the central bank. He has even stated that the financial markets are manipulated. Cramer understands what is happening and unlike his colleagues in the establishment media he at least has the guts to tell it like it is. It is encouraging that he has called for an investigation of the Federal Reserve because one is certainly needed. These bankers have bankrupted the United States and destroyed our economy. They need to be held accountable for their criminal actions.

Soros: Central Banks Have Lost Control

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Business leaders rattled by a slump in global markets appealed to the U.S. and other central banks on Wednesday to get a grip on the global economy and some accused them of losing their nerve.

With share prices tumbling again despite an emergency U.S. interest rate cut on Tuesday to counter fears of recession, top executives expressed alarm as they gathered for an annual meeting in the Swiss resort of Davos.

"Central banks have lost control," said financier George Soros, echoing the concerns of many of the more than 2,000 business and political leaders arriving in the snow-clad mountain town for the World Economic Forum meeting.

In a debate on the U.S. economy, 59 percent of participants agreed with a motion that central bankers had lost control.

Officials from Washington tried to counter the gloom.

"The U.S. economy has sound economic fundamentals," David McCormick, U.S. Undersecretary of the Treasury for International Affairs, said, challenging the view of many around him that a U.S. recession was inevitable.

"While we continue to believe the U.S. economy will grow, it will grow at a slower pace and there is no doubt downside risks have increased," he said.

But many executives said the surprise decision by the U.S. Federal Reserve on Tuesday to cut interest rates by 75 basis points looked like a panic move.

"I'm sort of worried that all they did yesterday was to hit the snooze button. (This is) excessive monetary accommodation that just takes us from bubble to bubble to bubble," said Stephen Roach, Asia head of U.S. bank Morgan Stanley.

Lawrence Summers, a former U.S. treasury chief, was critical too: "It's hard to give a high grade (to central banks) for what's happened in the last six months."

Another former head of the U.S. Treasury, John Snow, was more supportive of the U.S. central bank.

"What yesterday's action shows us is the Fed is focused but they are aware of negative trends in the economy and prepared to take bold steps," he said.

FIRESIDE SPAT

Business and political leaders gathering in Davos face what many fear could be the biggest financial crisis since World War Two.

The emergency U.S. interest rate cut on Tuesday, after two days of plummeting stock prices, set the tone for the WEF meeting where financial, industrial and political figures, including U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, are awaited.

Policymakers accustomed to relaxed chats in the winter splendor of the Swiss Alps will this year face a more torrid time as business leaders fret over the outlook.

"The thing that markets are desperate for right now is leadership, whether globally or regionally, and it seems this is lacking," said John Studzinski, head of U.S. private equity firm Blackstone's advisory business.

But other business leaders said even if the U.S. economy began to shrink, the impact for the rest of the world would be less than in the past, thanks to the booming economies of developing countries such as China and India.

"I think there is certainly better than 50 percent chance that the U.S. is headed into a recession," Coca-Cola Co. Chief Executive Neville Isdell told Reuters.

"But does this signal we are going to have significant contagion around the world, which means we are going into a global recession? I don't believe that is the case," he added.

Martin Sorrell, CEO of the world's second-biggest advertising and marketing company WPP Group Plc, said he saw no sign of a slowdown in his bellweather industry, although 2009 might be a different picture.

"We as an industry probably would be a lead indicator of recession and I think it is interesting that we have not seen a significant shift in purchasing intention in the advertising and marketing services industry as yet," he said.

The Fed's unilateral action on Tuesday, when it cut rates by 75 basis points, was its biggest emergency cut in two decades.

It has put more pressure on the European Central Bank to relax its view against cutting rates and coordinate a response.

But ECB chief Jean-Claude Trichet, speaking in Brussels on Wednesday before departing for Davos, refused to buckle, saying low inflation remained the bank's priority.

The U.S. Financial Crisis In Iraq

The U.S. military in Iraq has been extolling the achievements of its cooperation with civilians in the fight against extremists and insurgents. The mechanism of that cooperation, however, is greased by cash - and the budgetary spigot for it has been tightening in recent months.


That does not sit well for officers like Captain Joel Brown, in charge of Eagle company for the 2-2 Styker Cavalry Regiment. For him, money spent bankrolling the Sunni al-Sahwa ("Awakening") movement is money well spent. Al-Sahwa patrols neighborhoods in his area and effectively works as a local muscle, beating back insurgents and keeping the peace where local law enforcement has long since abandoned. When Brown's company arrived in southern Baghdad in August they found 50 roadside bombs in one day; they would sometime engage in two or three firefights daily. Now he pays nine Sunni contractors to manage 10 checkpoints with about 300 guards, in the process protecting schools, clinics and key intersections 24 hours a day. Soon there will be a total of 1,000 guards.


When these so-called "Concerned Citizens' League" (CLC) programs began, attacks against his men started decreasing. For Brown, the calculus is clear: "Every time we looe one of our guys it costs us $400,000 [in life insurance paid to family members]. Each Hellfire missile is $60,000 and we've used a ton of those. What's the price of peace? It's probably not as costly as the price of unrest. Money is my non-lethal ammunition. I'd rather give somebody a job than have to fight them."


That sentiment is echoed by captain David Dehart, a military intelligence officer working with Brown and other commanders in an area of southern Baghdad that used to be a no-go zone for U.S. troops. "A lot of these guys are $50 away from either putting in an IED [roadside bomb] or standing on a checkpoint with an AK" guarding the neighborhood for us, says Dehart.


Commanders on the ground draw their money from CERP (Commander's Emergency Response Program) funds. CERP funds are meant to cover everything from condolence payments to water and electricity infrastructure improvements. They also can give out micro-grants to neighborhood patrol and checkpoint contracts. The CERP budget for fiscal year 2007 was $750 million and while no cutbacks are expected for 2008 the money hasn't been authorized yet by Congress, which means the army's top brass is playing it safe and tightening its belt. According to Lt. Col. Gerry Messmer, A U.S. civil military operations officer in Baghdad, there is no problem with funding. "We are reviewing all requests for funds and asking the important question of how can we help [Iraqis] help themselves."


But the military bureaucracy can itself be a threat to the funds. A recent turnover of generals in Baghdad has led to a routine review of guidelines, regulations and spending. But what the incoming generals might view as cutting the fat off programs, lower-ranking officers see as a threat to the very goodwill and positive rapport they've worked months to established between themselves and community leaders. Brown says that higher-ups are going to cut the money each contractor receives - Sunni leaders who stick their necks out and who have been increasingly targeted by insurgents in the past few months. About 75% of the contract goes toward the salaries of the guards hired by the contractors. The remaining 25% - or about $11,000 - goes toward so-called administrative costs, which, apart from the minimal amount used to pay for uniforms, goes straight to the contractor himself.


Brown says that initially the plan was to reduce the contractor's take from 25% to a 4%-8% range, upon renewal of each contract. However, he says that officers spoke out and now the reduction is going to be more gradual, from 25% to 20%, and then to 10%. There will be cuts for the salary of checkpoint supervisors as well. "You are asking them to risk their lives and then cutting their salary down. It's not fair," says Brown, who regularly stops by his contractors' homes in the evening to sip small cups of sweet, hot Iraqi tea and learn about the neighborhood.


For captain Douglas Willig, who is in charge of an area adjacent to Brown's, the new CLC contracts will mean that 30% of all his workers will take a 30% pay cut next month. "My CLCs are going to change pretty drastically," says Willig. Previously Willig thought he could at least rely upon funds for micro-grants project to spark economic activity by helping Iraqis who wouldn't transition from the CLCs to the army or police to segue into small business. "The feeling was [micro-grants] was the best thing going," says Willig. He has received application packets for $150,000 in grants, but the colonel overseeing his command has only $200,000 in grant money for an area that is more than four times as large as Willig's. The colonel told Willig he will receive $25,000 in grant money, a fifth what he was expecting.


Another line of CERP funding is supposed to provide Willig with $10,000 from which to draw up to $1,000 at a time to pay Iraqis whose property has been damaged during operations. Two families seeking damages - one for $400 and one for $450 for windows blown out and walls broken down during different operations have been waiting for months because Willig's funding has run dry. "I've been telling them to come back later - I haven't had [this line of CERP funding] since October. There's bureaucracy involved and reviews and allocation at different levels. Two months ago I would have said come back tomorrow [to pick up the payment]", says Willig. "Today I've got no idea."


And without funds to encourage cooperation, the fragile peace of the last few months may come undone.
