Why we're not celebrating

Between December 1947 and December 1950, over 530 Palestinian villages and towns were destroyed. Half of the Palestinians were ethnically cleansed by underground Zionist forces even before Israel was unilaterally declared a state. Palestinians call these events of the late 1940s the Nakba (catastrophe).


The Palestinian refugees are the largest remaining refugee population in the world. Seven million of the ten million Palestinians are refugees or displaced people. They are prevented from returning to their homes and lands even though international law and U.N. resolutions demand it.


The Israeli Knesset adopted a set of laws that are contrary to international law that ensured no refugees are allowed to return (as customarily happens at the end of a war) and that their land is confiscated for use by Jews only ("absentee property" laws). The removal of 75-80% of non-Jews from what became Israel by 1950 was a necessary but not sufficient condition for creating and maintaining a Zionist-defined Jewish state. What the nascent state did subsequently was expand its borders and continue to appropriate native Palestinian lands, expel many of the Palestinians and discriminate against those who remained against all odds.



Israel has no constitution but promulgated a set of basic laws that govern it essentially "for the benefit of the Jewish people." These laws recognize members of a particular religion (including converts) as nationals of the state regardless of where they live or their current citizenship. In Israeli law, all Jews are part of Am Yisrael (the people of Israel). To get papers of citizenship all they have to do is show up in the state and claim their automatic citizenship.



Israel is unique among the nations in not being a country of its citizens but of "Jewish people everywhere." No other country defines itself as a country for members of a particular religion (including converts) regardless of where they live. No other country has supranational entities that have authority superseding state authority and native rights. For example, the Jewish National Fund is not a state agency but it has on its own website the amazing statement that "The Jewish National Fund is the custodian of the land of Israel on behalf of its owners, Jewish people everywhere." 91% of the land (most taken from the 530 Palestinian towns and villages depopulated between 1947-1949) is not privately owned but turned over from the custodian of "absentee property" to the JNF for lease by Jews.



Israeli law considers one fourth of the remaining Palestinians (300,000 of the 1.3 million Palestinians with Israeli citizenship) as "present absentees." This means that their land and/or homes were confiscated from them and turned over to the Jewish Agency/JNF. By international law they are considered internally displaced people (refugees).





Israel has maintained an illegal occupation and colonization of the West Bank and Gaza for 40 years. This includes 133 illegal Israeli settlements, 562 military checkpoints, 610 flying checkpoints, Israeli-only roads and settlements built on Palestinian lands, denial of residency rights, 11,500 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails and, just in the past 7 years alone, 35,000 more Palestinians were made homeless by home demolitions and land confiscations. The Gaza Strip has been turned into a large concentration camp where 1.5 million Palestinians (most refugees) are held in a desert strip with what the U.N. Human Rights commissioner has declared as "catastrophic" conditions.


Israel is funded to the tune of $5 billion (3 billion in direct aid, 2 billion other) from U.S. taxes and shielded from international law and basic human rights conventions by our government (e.g. 37 vetoes at the U.N. security Council). We thus hold special responsibility in this situation (and in the atrocities in Iraq that derive from it), which is not the same for example for Darfur, Sudan (where our government is not funding oppression but is actually at least verbally trying to stop it).

Israeli artists declared in 2002: "If the state of Israel aspires to perceive itself as a democracy, it should abandon once and for all, any legal and ideological foundation of religious, ethnic and demographic discrimination. The state of Israel should strive to become the state of all its citizens. The Slump: It's a Guy Thing
Men, concentrated in the weakest sectors, are losing jobs in this downturn, while women make gains

They eat from the same dishes and sleep in the same beds, but they seem to be operating in two different economies. From last November through this April, American women aged 20 and up gained nearly 300,000 jobs, according to the household survey of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). At the same time, American men lost nearly 700,000 jobs. You might even say American men are in recession, and American women are not.

What's going on? Simply put, men have the misfortune of being concentrated in the two sectors that are doing the worst: manufacturing and construction. Women are concentrated in sectors that are still growing, such as education and health care.

This situation is hardly good news for women, though. While they're getting more jobs, their pay is stagnant. Also, most share households—and bills—with the men who are losing jobs. And the "female" economy can't stay strong for long if the "male" economy weakens too much.

The troubles for the American male worker, while exacerbated by the current slump, are hardly new. The manufacturing sector is in long-term decline, and construction goes through repeated booms and busts. Meanwhile women are graduating from college at higher rates than men. Some analysts even argue that men are less suited than women to the knowledge economy, which rewards supposedly female traits such as sensitivity, intuition, and a willingness to collaborate. "Men have tended to do better in the hierarchies, following orders and relying on positional power," says Andy Hines, a futurist at the Washington (D.C.) consulting firm Social Technologies, who previously worked for Kellogg (K) and Dow Chemical (DOW).

Problem Industries
Whether you buy that argument or not, it's clear that right now men are in a bad spot. The share of all men aged 20 and over with jobs has fallen since last November, when private-sector employment peaked, going from 72.9% to 72.2% in April. For women the ratio rose, from 58.1% to 58.3%. The adult male unemployment rate has risen twice as much as the female jobless rate since November. Those figures from the BLS' household survey are echoed in its separate survey of employers.

To see why, go sector by sector. Manufacturing is over 70% male and construction is about 88% male. Meanwhile the growing education and health services sector is 77% female. The government sector, which has remained strong, is 57% female. The securities business, which is filled with high-paying jobs, is likely to be the next sector to get whacked—and more than 60% of its workers are men.

Men are having a harder time than women getting back on track after losing a job. "For a man to move from a $20- or $30-an-hour union job to being a Wal-Mart (WMT) greeter is devastating," says Claudia Goldin, a Harvard University labor historian. Men also shy away from some of the growing fields, such as nursing. Only about 10% of nursing students nationwide are male, notes Harriet R. Feldman, dean of the Pace University School of Nursing. Some retired nurses are actually going back to work because their husbands have lost jobs, says Lois Cooper, vice-president for employee relations and diversity at staffing firm Adecco Group North America in Melville, N.Y.

The weakness of the male economy is squeezing people such as Brian Day, 45, a union carpenter in Ossian, Ind., who made about $35,000 in construction last year but only $1,500 so far in 2008. The family of five is living off his jobless benefits and the $35,000 salary of his wife, a supermarket supervisor. Says Day: "I feel guilty about it." Jeff Bainter, 53, a railroad worker in Muncie, Ind., has enough seniority to keep his job but sees younger men getting the ax. He says there's more security but lower pay in what his wife, Cynthiana, does for a living: medical billing.

Wal-Mart press releases and media news reports to the public are disingenuous.

Over 700,000 Chinese exporters / manufacturers (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/95f406ee-fc69-11dc-9229-000077b07658.html) are now refusing to accept U.S. dollars as payment for products for retail sales. Wal-Mart's on-shelf stock numbers have been significantly reduced. Merchandise quality is now marginal to bad and in many cases becoming unavailable as prices skyrocket with broad spectrum factors coming together to create an uncomfortable sales environment. Wal-Mart's total overhead is becoming unsustainable we believe.

Wal-Mart estimates that utility expenses rose by $100 million in its second quarter (one three month period), when it also spent $30 million more to truck merchandise from its U.S. distribution centers to stores. Those additional costs add up to almost 5 percent of Wal-Mart's second-quarter profit of $2.8 billion.

ANB Financial banks closed by federal regulators over 'unsafe and unsound' practices

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Federal regulators says they've closed ANB Financial National Association banks after discovering "unsafe and unsound" business practices there.

David Barr, a spokesman for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. says many customers served by the bank's nine locations had accounts under $100,000, which will be fully insured by the government. Barr says customers can continue to write checks and draw money from ATMs through the weekend.

Barr says Pulaski Bank and Trust Co. agreed to assume control over ANB Financial's bank locations, which will be open Monday.

As of Jan. 31, federal regulators say ANB Financial had about $2.1 billion in assets and $1.8 billion in total deposits.

It was the third closure this year of an FDIC-insured bank. Douglass National Bank, a Missouri bank with $58.5 million in assets, was shut in January; another Missouri institution with assets of $18.7 million, Hume Bank, was shut down in March.

Both were dwarfed in size of ANB Financial, where regulators found lax lending standards, mostly for construction and development loans for projects in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming, as well as Arkansas.

Observers have been watching for signs of bank distress resulting from the mortgage crisis. Profits at federally insured U.S. banks and thrifts plunged to a 16-year low in the fourth quarter as institutions set aside a record-high amount to cover losses from sour mortgages.

The FDIC is planning to beef up its staff, including temporarily hiring up to 25 retired FDIC employees who worked in the agency's more than 200-person division that handles failed banks. They will handle an anticipated increase in bank failures.

Fair-minded commentators avoid mere purely private bashing of pedophiles and homosexuals, in entirely private arrangements. Why? Because it is not news Just some folks and their private lives.

When do the matters cross the line of considerations of privacy? And become data that the public should know about? When do national security and related issues make the crossing of the privacy line important?

Many states nowadays have laws forbidding discrimination against persons because of race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. And this applies to equal accommodations, restaurants, hotels, jobs, and other everyday concerns. Some states authorize so-called same sex marriages and life-time partner arrangements, as to health and other fringe benefits, probate, and similar items

Since our weekly public access Cable TV Show started in February, 1991, we have approached the line dividing privacy from national security, with great caution, crossing it only about twice in all those years.

A fellow alternative journalist once offered me a book of sordid photos with supporting documentation. The explicit pictures showed the Chief Judge of one of the courts in the Chicago area sexually molesting little boys.

The fellow journalist said, "Sherman, you ought to finger this Chief Judge. He is a sickie. Put these pictures on your cable tv show." I responded, "I already know about that Chief Judge. Yes, we have a thick file on that crook. He is a bum. In an additional government capacity, he whitewashed a government report how the underworld blackmailed some federal judges in Chicago. How? By throwing a federal appeals Judge, W. Lynn Parkinson, into Lake Michigan, in 1959. I had part of the secret government report and I brought a suit to have the whole report publicly disclosed."

"Get this", I added, "The crooked, blackmailed judges that sat on the bench with the then murdered judge, ruled on my case, claiming I could not get the balance of the government report, because the government warehouse in Suitland, Maryland supposedly burned down. No proof was offered by the government or the judges"

"Look", I said, "as a free lance journalist, head of a court reform group and courtroom spectator, I several times saw the Chief Judge coming into the courtroom very late, keeping everybody waiting. He was often so drunk, he could not mount the step up to his chair at the bench. He favored the reputed mafia projectionists union one time. As an apparent pay-off, they rewarded his apparently misfit son with a high-paying movie theater projectionist job."

Finally I said, "Yes, I know the Chief Judge is a crook. But I prefer pictures and documents relating to his corruption and bribery. We in our organization knew the Chief Judge was a child molester and a drunk. But I do not run a commercial tv show. I am not trying to amuse idle-minded viewers with stuff like in these pictures. We already have a big audience. Hey, get this book of dirty pictures out of my house."

On another occasion,several sources each came to us with details and pictures about Congressman Henry Hyde, a Republican from the Chicago-area. He purports to be a spiritual, family-oriented sort, but is apparently actually a lowlife. In an unincorporated area adjoining Chicago (that is, not actually designated a village or municipality), he reportedly runs a strip joint using Russian women dancing naked. They were apparently lured into the U.S. with promises they would work as "office employees". We also understand that Hyde does not, from the strip club, apparently report any proceeds to the state or federal tax collectors. Also, according to court records and other sources of data, we firmly believe Hyde has been a secret, silent partner in a gun store and profitted from selling illegal gun silencers.

Hyde as then head of the House Judiciary Committee favored Clinton with impeachment resolution charges watered down to include mostly items of a sexual nature relating to Monica Lewinsky. As we have pointed out, Hyde was subject to blackmail because he had charges pending against him for massive misapplication of federally-insured funds at a time he was a director of a Chicago-area Savings & Loan Association that went bust. And Hyde was in a position to blackimail the Judge to set Hyde free of the federal charges.

So, I rejected the idea of fingering Henry Hyde on my cable tv show with sordid pictures.

In 1992, after careful considerations of what is public and what is private, I arranged to have cablecast a very controversial one hour tv show. Direct witnesses had informed us that Hillary Clinton, originally from the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge and whose husband Bill was then running for President, was part of a circle of four Lesbian business women involved in monstrous violations of national security. Hillary's business partner, Diane Lewis, was supposedly running a firm refurbishing sizeable airplanes for use by Mid-East sheiks.

Delivered to our tv show was an entire file cabinet of records, travel documents, secret meeting places with known terrorists, part of the Abu Nidal Terrorist Worldwide Group. Diane Lewis and her partners were secretly shipping missile parts to the known terrorists. We had the secret notebooks, handwritten notes, secret address books, secret telexes and faxes, the whole works. We put key items up on the screen of our tv show and said that by corruption, the FBI and the CIA were covering this all up.. Before they were married, in a "marriage of covenience", Bill and Hillary each had separate roles since they were of college age, with covert operations of America's secret political police, the CIA. Hillary and her women business partners and the Lesbian angle was important to the mess we showed.

Because of our tv show, Diane Lewis lost her protection with the spy agencies. As shown by an article in the New York Times in September, 1992, Ms Lewis was arrested The federal judge hearing her criminal case did NOT hear it in open court but behind closed doors. The Judge was informed that the criminal defendant, Diane Lewis, charged with violating U.S. Export laws, was a business partner of the new First Lady and Ms Lewis arranged to become a CIA snitch to supposedly help them finger more terrorists. So Ms Lewis was quietly turned loose.

As the new First Lady, Hillary, as a reprisal, arranged to inflict unlawful harassment and surveillance upon me and my tv associates, by putting us illegally on her "Enemies List", for the secret political police to do dirty tricks on us

We brought a damage suit against her and her associates, pointing out that First Lady is not an official government authorized position, just a title. And that it was illegal what she was doing to us. Our sixty-five page complaint, with attached documents, spelled out highly detailed facts, dates, and occurrences The U.S. District Court Judge, George M. Marovich (same one Henry Hyde blackmailed to set Hyde loose) dismissed our case without allowing us a single moment actually in his courtroom. He said we had too many specific dates and details for him to consider. The Judge did not disqualify himself even though we showed in our court papers that he owned a suburban shopping center and his secret silent partners were known gangsters jointly with corrupt top Chicago IRS officials, all of them using the shopping mall as a giant money laundry in a monstrous tax evasion.

Guess what happened when we appealed to the corrupt banker-judges in Chicago's Federal Appeals Court? They refused to hear our appeal and unlawfully barred us from all the federal courts in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. The U.S. Supreme Court refused us a remedy. Do not waste my time mentioning our First Amendment Freedom of the Press guarantees that were thus cancelled.

Several years ago, some devout Catholic activists contacted me. They urged that I have some of them as guests on a one-hour program. They wanted to publicize a problem worrying them. There are priests, they told me, that as pedophiles, sexually molest choir boys and such.

I said I had heard about such things that have been going on for many centuries. I told them I hesitate, me being of another religion, to put such things on the air. I suggested they find a Catholic venue of some sort, a Catholic magazine or such, to bring their charges before the public. After all, I told them, Chicago is the largest Catholic Archdiocese in the nation and I do not want to appear to be an anti-Catholic which I am not.

Many months later, the American monopoly press began hollaring about this centuries-old problem of reputed sexual molesting of children by Catholic priests. I find it more than strange that many months later, the mostly pro-British U.S. pressfakers are fingering Catholic priests in areas heavily dominated by Irish Catholics, such as Boston and Chicago. And that such Catholics tend to vote for the Democrat Party, whereas most in the news media are pro-GOP. We have cablecast a several part tv series entitled "The Irish Question", where we dare bring out a mostly censored subject, about the British dominating the American press, print, radio, and commercial tv (not public access cable, non-commercial tv) And, for example, the British Royal Family bitterly opposes and seeks to discriminate against Irish Catholics. The British royals are major stockholders of the Tribune Company, parent of the media monster Chicago Tribune, which likes to bash Chicago's Irish Catholic Mayor, Richard M. Daley.

The priest problem has been known for centuries. Why bring it up now? To cause great discomfort in areas of Irish Catholics who tend to vote for the Democrat Party?

Only about the second time in all the years of our work, we recently posted a story about George W. Bush and his male sex-mate. That this situation is outraging some U.S. Secret Service agents who have quit in sizeable numbers. AND, that this situation violates national security in that, the Red Chinese are using it to blackmail U.S. weapons secrets out of Bush as the occupant and resident of the White House.

George W. Bush's father, George Herbert Walker Bush, is apparently a known pedophile. Daddy Bush was entangled in a terrible scandal that started with the downfall of a financial institution in November, 1988, just at the time Daddy Bush was elected President.

On November 4, 1988, in Omaha, Nebraska, the Franklin Community Credit Union was closed by the FBI and the IRS. A kingpin in the operation had been siphoning off many millions of dollars to reporteldly finance a pedophile ring operating between Omaha, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. Caught up in the mess of pedophiles, child porno, and such was Daddy Bush.

Related details are in a book called "The Franklin Cover-Up", by John DeCamp, a Lincoln, Nebraska attorney once a Nebraska State Senator. A companion book is called "The Mystery of the Carefully Crafted Hoax", with a forward by Ted Gunderson, the former head of the Los Angeles FBI office who after 1979, specializes in investigations of child molesting ring satanic rituals and such.

A Committee of the Nebraska State Senate was formed to investigate the pedophile charges. Their investigator was Gary Caradori. He took his son to a sports game in Chicago and while in Chicago, Gary was able to apparently pin down with witnesses the role in the pedophile ring of the Elder Bush. Gary called from Chicago to Loran Schmit, a member of the Nebraska State Senate investigating committee.

Gary "called committee chairman Loran Schmit, before his (Gary's) return trip and said, 'I got it, Loran. We've got 'em by the balls' ".That was July 11, 1990. "Caradori wasn't finished with his investigation. He and his son were killed on 7-11-90 while returning from the All Star game in Chicago. The plane came apart in the air and crashed and burned on impact. The NTSB [National Transportation Safety Board] has not issued a formal statement on the cause of the crash. In addition to going to the ball game, he was also working some leads on the case." And Gary's "briefcase and papers were inexplicably missing from the crash site, along with the two rear seats of the plane." (from "The Mystery of the Carefully Crafted Hoax", pages 77-78. The book goes into great details how the state and federal authorities, through a hoax, tried to cover up the pedophile ring operating at the highest levels in the nation's capital.)

Since the early 1960s, I have been more or less on the periphery of the press. I have through many circumstances become a sort of father confessor to various reporters, print, radio, and tv. They know from our background, that we never, never, never divulge the names of witnesses and sources. Yes, it puts a burden on us but we do this to protect them. We do not want to find one of our key witnesses or sources, mysteriously fell off a building to his death, or their body was found floating in the canal, or their plane somehow blew up.

We share useful information with our sources, all the way from local reporters, to White House reporters, to key journalists on several continents and in other countries. As a volunteer unpaid consultant, I share ideas how to get their contract renewed when the editor, news director, and such somehow takes a dislike to them. Giving a paid reporter "dirt" on his troublesome boss, often is helpful in getting the reporter's contract renewed. In return, the reporters know where to communicate the details of censored stories.

To preserve the contact and their cover, I instruct them to avoid acknowledging that they know us. If somehow pressed to comment on us, they should say something negative. Then they call me from their unlisted home phone and we have a little laugh about preserving their job and their "cover", so that they stay at their post and help us with an important story that would otherwise remain censored and secret.

From time to time, some reporters have confided to me that they are not promoted, not given choice assignments, and other career obstructions occur, because there is a "pedophile/homosexual underground", such as, they claim, at ABC News and elsewhere up and down the important media outlets and networks.

I have paid attention to these complaints but I have cautioned our contacts, that such finger pointing might be perceived as just private gay-bashing UNLESS there is some angle, such as the news bosses and such are blackmailed into running or not running some corporate scandal or like with George W. Bush, the private life details are used by sworn enemies of the U.S. to blackmail the White House, such as has occurred with Bush, Senior and Junior.

For example, two well-known radio commentators whose programs are heard in most every important radio market in all 50 states, have homosexual situations that are used apparently to force them, among other ways, to slant things FOR the GOP and against Democrats. Although their private lives raise many questions, so far, the public generally does not know. As to them, at some point, the line of prifvacy has to be crossed because of how it effects what goes on major radio commentary shows throughout the nation.[A tip-off, is that they have few, if any good advertisers. Is the GOP paying for them to be on the air?] A key criterion: Do THEIR private life arrangements help violate national security and aid those who would want to have AMERICA'S HITLER? And Overthrow the American Republic and cancel the organic law, namely the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights?

Remember, some outspoken sorts point, as to this, as to the homosexual rituals, even satanic versions, in forests and elsewhere by the German Nazi military and the Nazi secret political police, their Gestapo. This was done, in furtherance of the German aristocracy's plan to use Adolf Hitler for THEIR purposes.

The Water Restoration Act of 2007, along with others, gives the federal government complete control over every waterway, river, stream, lake, aquifer, creek, slew, swamp, underground spring and even the rain that runs off your roof. Why? Well to better protect you from polluters and to ensure water safety, and of course “national security”.

Here’s the real deal. Oil which has been deemed the worlds most valuable commodity (remember that word) is quickly being replaced by water. Water is the new “gold”. Under the Public Trust doctrine, the government is prohibited from converting something such as water (a human right…we can’t live without it) to a commodity. It must remain in a public trust, meaning that it is so important to our survival that it should never be subjected to markets, trading or private interests. In other words, it should never be reclassified as a commodity. But this Act lays the groundwork for removing from the Public Trust this basic human right which is a necessity, and will facilitate it being reclassified a “needed commodity”. Enter the multi-national corporations.

What is under way is the effort to classify water as a commodity and not a right. All of this actually started with NAFTA and then CAFTA. Both agreements, which are not enforceable as they are both unconstitutional have been parts of a puzzle that until recently seemed not to make any sense at all. Both are focused on giving multinational corporations the right to lay claim to food production whether it is agriculture or animal ranching, to force out family farms, to patent their new “frankenseeds” and put the resulting GMO food on our grocery shelves without labeling the foods as altered.

The corporations can now sue the government (and have) if it acts in any way to prevent it from making profits it believes it is entitled to. This ability to sue for impaired profit making can be the result of environmental regulations, of Federal laws which may prevent the corporations from hiring illegal workers, or issues of eminent domain in which an individuals’ land stands in the way of corporate profiteering and the courts have not acted to protect the interests of the corporation. The corporation then claims “trade illegal” provisions of NAFTA and CAFTA and our federal laws and regulations are put aside, along with property rights.

All that was left to capture from the public was the water supply. CAFTA goes a long way in establishing the privatization of water supplies, including in-land navigated waters and the right to use and access the water supplies.

If the federal government is not able to gain total control of all water from whatever source, it is highly unlikely that water can be taken from the status of Public Trust and moved to one of a commodity, which is exactly what the Water Restoration Act of 2007 will enable.

If CAFTA protections and provisions for corporations and the provisions within CAFTA that put the rights of investors above those of the individual, or human rights, cannot come into play, it will be nearly impossible to expose our water supply to global markets. CAFTA’s primary aim is to protect and promote investors regardless of the cost to individuals or communities.

Water is not only a basic human right, but also a natural resource. Inland states like Minnesota have Public Trust Laws (in addition to federal doctrine) which maintain the use of waterways for drinking and for recreation purposes. Every lake here has public water access due to the Public Trust which everyone contributes to in one way or another. No one can claim land at the bottom of a lake……its commonly held. No one can claim private ownership of lake fish stocks, or other natural resources resulting from the lake’s existence. This applies to rivers also, including the Mississippi which runs through the state.

The Water Restoration Act of 2007 would federalize all inland and coastal waters from any source. This act is needed to set the stage for the privatization guaranteed to corporations under CAFTA and would effectively convert the entire water supply from any source into a commodity.

As it is, any corporate agriculture business operating in any area is allowed to bypass water treatment plants, sewage treatment and the associated costs and to tap directly into underground aquifers even at the cost of depleting the water supply to the surrounding communities. GMO seeds, especially “traitor” seeds require as much as three times the normal amount of water to activate and to grow, but any efforts to limit use or regulate disposal even by monetary assessment have been unsuccessful. The corporate rights now exceed that of the individual or community. CAFTA clearly states repeatedly that “investor protections” must be a priority.

Using the NAFTA provisions, along with even more detrimental CAFTA provisions, the World Bank along with the United Nations are active in the effort to convert the worlds’ water supply into a commodity to be controlled by private investors via global trade and investment agreements. If these efforts are successful, water will no longer be a community or individual right and resource necessary to maintain life, but a globally traded commodity subject to markets and your ability to pay.

The World Trade organization in collusion with provisions of NAFTA, have been instrumental in converting water into a tradable commodity and as such subject to international trade policies which favor no one but the giant corporations. In each instance of corporations attempting to overturn domestic environmental laws or regulations, the laws have been rendered null using the “trade illegal” provisions of both NAFTA and CAFTA which declare that the right of the corporation cannot be superseded or infringed upon by laws or regulations that hinder the amount of profit they estimate can be attained.

The World Bank already has established a system whereby credit or loans will not be issued to Third World countries and even less stressed countries, unless they agree to allow foreign investors access to privatize the water supply. In Bolivia this resulted in mass demonstrations that finally forced out a subsidiary of Bechtel that had privatized the water supply, increased costs three-fold minimally, dispensed with upkeep and left ¼ of the rural homes without access to water.

England has privatized their water system and costs rose 45% overnight, all but skeleton crews remained of the maintenance sector and the quality of water has dropped significantly.

In one Canadian town several people became ill and one died from an ecoli contamination in the water supply. This occurred after the supply had been privatized, and the owner of the water supply knew of the contamination. The public was never notified until after people became ill.

In March of 2000 at the Hague, a meeting occurred where water executives stated that as long as water was coming out of the tap the public had no right to any information as to how it got there….. Or its quality.

Here in the States, private investors have in some places succeeded in taking over community water supplies, in other places the communities have fought back against the sale of publicly held supplies realizing that this most important element of human survival should never be under the control of private corporations whose one and only duty is to make a profit for investors.

As water has historically been deemed a human right and necessity, so much so that the Public Trust Doctrine was put on paper, how could anyone in good conscience believe water is, or promote water as, a tradable commodity? How can there be so many callous and greedy individuals running around out there who would willingly see another human thirst to death just so they can make a buck? Apparently there are many.

The Water Restoration Act 2007 relies heavily on promotion based on protecting the water supply from pollution, from terrorists, and of course “national security”. The truth is it has nothing to do with any of these things. The WRA will allow unfettered pollution with no recourse for communities or individuals and “trade illegal” treatment of local and state laws. Before the entire water supply can be sold off to private interests the federal government must gain control of the entire water system. This is what the WRA will do.

This Act would be more aptly titled “The Water Confiscation Act” as this is exactly what is intended. All it is set to do is to strike down the Public Trust Doctrine and facilitate the conversion of water from a basic human right into a commodity. The only threat to “national security” here is from the government and the massive corporations who are behind it.

I guess we shouldn’t be surprised by any of this. After all, the Security & Prosperity Partnership refers to people as “human capital”. I wonder how long it will be before they refer to us as a “needed commodity” and trade and sell us on the global market.

Control the food, control the water and you control the people. I believe it was Henry Kissinger who first made this observation when speaking about the importance of depopulation through the use of eugenics. Obviously good old Henry realized that overtaking the food and water supplies would go a long way in deciding who had a right to life.

Johann Hari: The loathsome smearing of Israel's critics

In the US and Britain, there is a campaign to smear anybody who tries to describe the plight of the Palestinian people. It is an attempt to intimidate and silence – and to a large degree, it works. There is nobody these self-appointed spokesmen for Israel will not attack as anti-Jewish: liberal Jews, rabbis, even Holocaust survivors.


My own case isn't especially important, but it illustrates how the wider process of intimidation works. I have worked undercover at both the Finsbury Park mosque and among neo-Nazi Holocaust deniers to expose the Jew-hatred there; when I went on the Islam Channel to challenge the anti-Semitism of Islamists, I received a rash of death threats calling me "a Jew-lover", "a Zionist-homo pig" and more.

Ah, but wait. I have also reported from Gaza and the West Bank. Last week, I wrote an article that described how untreated sewage was being pumped from illegal Israeli settlements on to Palestinian land, contaminating their reservoirs. This isn't controversial. It has been documented by Friends of the Earth, and I have seen it with my own eyes.

The response? There was little attempt to dispute the facts I offered. Instead, some of the most high profile "pro-Israel" writers and media monitoring groups – including Honest Reporting and Camera – said I an anti-Jewish bigot akin to Joseph Goebbels and Mahmoud Ahmadinejadh, while Melanie Phillips even linked the stabbing of two Jewish people in North London to articles like mine. Vast numbers of e-mails came flooding in calling for me to be sacked.

Any attempt to describe accurately the situation for Palestinians is met like this. If you recount the pumping of sewage onto Palestinian land, "Honest Reporting" claims you are reviving the anti-Semitic myth of Jews "poisoning the wells." If you interview a woman whose baby died in 2002 because she was detained – in labour – by Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint within the West Bank, "Honest Reporting" will say you didn't explain "the real cause": the election of Hamas in, um, 2006. And on, and on.

The former editor of Israel's leading newspaper, Ha'aretz, David Landau, calls the behaviour of these groups "nascent McCarthyism". Those responsible hold extreme positions of their own that place them way to the right of most Israelis. Alan Dershowitz and Melanie Phillips are two of the most prominent figures sent in to attack anyone who disagrees with the Israeli right. Dershowitz is a lawyer, Harvard professor and author of The Case For Israel. He sees ethnic cleansing as a trifling matter, writing: "Political solutions often require the movement of people, and such movement is not always voluntary ... It is a fifth-rate issue analogous in many respects to some massive urban renewal." If a prominent American figure takes a position on Israel to the left of this, Dershowitz often takes to the airwaves to call them anti-Semites and bigots.

The journalist Melanie Phillips performs a similar role in Britain. Last year a group called Independent Jewish Voices was established with this mission statement: "Palestinians and Israelis alike have the right to peace and security." Jews including Mike Leigh, Stephen Fry and Rabbi David Goldberg joined. Phillips swiftly dubbed them "Jews For Genocide", and said they "encourage" the "killers" of Jews. Where does this come from? She says the Palestinians are an "artificial" people who can be collectively punished because they are "a terrorist population". She believes that while "individual Palestinians may deserve compassion, their cause amounts to Holocaust denial as a national project". Honest Reporting quotes Phillips as a model of reliable reporting.

These individuals spray accusations of anti-Semitism so liberally that by their standards, a majority of Jewish Israelis have anti-Semitic tendencies. Dershowitz said Jimmy Carter's decision to speak to the elected Hamas government "border[ed] on anti-Semitism." A Ha'aretz poll last month found that 64 per cent of Israelis want their government to do just that.

As US President, Jimmy Carter showed his commitment to Israel by giving it more aid than anywhere else and brokering the only peace deal with an Arab regime the country has ever enjoyed. He also wants to see a safe and secure Palestine alongside it – so last year he wrote a book called Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid. It is a bland and factual canter through the major human rights reports. There is nothing there you can't read in the mainstream Israeli press every day. Carter's comparison of life on the West Bank (not within Israel) to Apartheid South Africa is not new. The West Bank is ruled in the interests of a small Jewish minority; it is bisected by roads for the Jewish settlers from which Palestinians are banned. The Israeli human rights group B'tselem says this "bears striking similarities to the racist Apartheid regime". Yet for repeating these facts in the US, Carter has widely called "a racist". Several universities have even refused to let the ex-President speak to their students.

These campus battles often succeed. Norman Finkelstein is a political scientist in the US whose parents were both Jewish survivors of the Warsaw ghetto and the Nazi concentration camps. They lost every blood relative. He made his reputation exposing a hoax called From Time Immemorial by Joan Peters which claimed that Palestine was virtually empty when Zionist settlers arrived, and the people claiming to be Palestinians were mostly impostors who had come from local areas to cash in. Finkelstein showed it to be scarred by falsified figures and gross misreading of sources. From that moment on, he was smeared as an anti-Semite by those who had lauded the book. But it was when Finkelstein revealed two years ago that Alan Dershowitz had, without acknowledgement, drawn wholesale from Peters' hoax for his book The Case For Israel, that the worst began. Dershowitz campaigned to make sure Finkelstein was denied tenure at his university. He even claimed that Finkelstein's mother – who made it through Maidenek and two slave-labour camps – had collaborated with the Nazis. The campaign worked. Finkelstein was let go by De Paul University, simply for speaking the truth.

Are the likes of Dershowitz and Phillips and Honest Reporting becoming more shrill because they can sense they are losing the argument? Liberal Jews – the majority – are now setting up rivals to the hard-right organisations they work with, because they believe this campaign of demonisation is damaging us all. It damages the Palestinians, because it prevents honest discussion of their plight. It damages the Israelis, because it pushes them further down an aggressive and futile path. And it damages diaspora Jews, because it makes real anti-Semitism harder to deal with.

We need to look the witch-hunters in the eye and say, as Joseph Welch said to Joe McCarthy himself: "You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? H ave you left no sense of decency?"

10-year-old gives birth in Idaho; Suspected illegal immigrant charged with rape
A 37-year-old man is charged with raping a 10-year-old girl who gave birth last month in Idaho.

"St. Anthony Police said they were notified of the young girl's pregnancy by medical personnel after she went in for treatment at a doctor's office," KIFI-TV reports on its website.

One day later, the ABC affiliate says the young mother delivered a 6-pound girl at Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg, Idaho.

KIDK-TV says Guadalupe Gutierrez-Juarez, a suspected illegal immigrant, is being held at the Fremont County Jail. He's due in court next week to face rape charges.

"I wouldn't have believed a 10-year-old could conceive in the first place," Fremont County Sheriff Ralph Davis tells the Associated Press.

The CBS affiliate has more on the local reaction.

Update at 2:54 p.m. ET: Thanks to reader Aaron T. for sending us a copy of the Post Register story, which says investigators are still trying to determine the suspect's immigration status.

"A hospital spokesman would not discuss the condition of the girl or the baby and would not say if either was still in the hospital," the paper says.

Iran arrests group for mosque blast, blames West

Iran has arrested members of a terrorist group with links to Britain and the United States who were behind a blast at a mosque last month that killed 14 and wounded 200 in the southern city of Shiraz, a news agency said.

Iranian officials had previously said the April 12 blast, in the Shohada mosque during an evening prayer sermon by a prominent local cleric, was caused by explosives left over from an exhibition commemorating the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war.

"The blast ... was caused by a bombing by a terrorist group with links to Western countries, especially Britain and America," ISNA news agency quoted Intelligence Minister Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei as saying late on Wednesday.

Five or six people were arrested, including the main culprit who was trying to flee the country, Mohseni-Ejei said. The group was found with weapons and "intended to carry out similar acts in other places," he said.

"The group, which has relations to Western countries including Britain and America, has carried out other terrorist activities in the country in the past few years," he said.

Tehran has in the past accused Britain and the United States of trying to destabilise the Islamic Republic by supporting rebels, mainly those in sensitive border areas.

Mohseni-Ejei said Iran had handed intelligence about the group to Western nations but they had ignored its appeal for action. "They (those in the group) were even supported," the minister said.

The minister's remarks echo allegations U.S. officials have made about Iranian support for militias in Iraq that have fought U.S. and U.S.-backed government forces there, accusations Tehran denies.

Security is normally tight in Shi'ite Muslim Iran and bomb attacks have been rare in recent years. Several people were killed in 2005 and 2006 in blasts in a southwestern province with a large Sunni Arab population.

Shiraz is a southern city with more than one million inhabitants and is a popular tourist destination.
